I would be very tempted by a 475/480 Marlin now. Lol, 😂yep a bit of paragraphing, punctuation, and clarity of thought may have helped my prior post. I am assuming the Rossi run of 480 Rugers were functional. And, I have actually laid eyes on one in the past. Though, I was not willing to pay the price at the time, I would be very tempted now. This comes after having a new production Rossi 454 in a hand for a few days without shots fired. The prior Marlin 475/480 was a catalogue item. But apparently, like Big Foot there was not an actual physical specimen to be found. I am not sure if any left the factory ? I do think a functional Ruger Marlin in the right platform, reasonably priced for the inflated times, might be a help. That I might be interested in also. The only other 475/480 production lever gun that I am aware of is the BHA. Beautiful rifles, but out of my price range for my intended use.

Yeah, had a little fun at your expense. Truth be told I like both Marlin and Rossi rifles. A 35 Rem fan here and a Marlin has that covered. Also a 454 fan and have long admired the Rossi but it has proven elusive thus far.
Anyhow back to the thread: lots to like about the 480 however it seems to me the masses jump from the 44 mag to the 500 S&W X-frame and probably all the other rimmed cartridges from 44 special through 500L are destined to be enthusiast/niche rounds (45 Colt cowboy loadings perhaps being an exception).

I've been eyeing a 6 shot 480 Alaskan that's been in my LGS for over a year. It has a beautiful fit and finish, .004 bbl/cyl gap and I've negotiated $1100 out the door. I'm considering the purchase but wondering if 480 continues to be difficult to find or if it doesn't shoot well, could it be converted to 500 JRH? I know that's still a niche round. I've seen some conversions with the Alaskan but I believe they went to 5 shot cylinders. I'll probably contact Bowen or JRH and ask but curious if anyone is familiar with such and if they think that's a fair price. Thank y'all!

I think $1100 OTD is a more than fair price, were it anywhere I could put my hands on it that Alaskan would be gone :-)

What percent of handgun users have a need for the 480 Ruger? Pretty simple really. If I ever considered the "need" of anything gun related, I'd have very few guns in my safe. "Want" is the word that I consider most often.

I don't have a 480. Yet. The SRH has never appealed to me. I simply don't like the looks and don't scope my revolvers. However I have wanted a Bisley since they came out. I missed the boat on them when they were out and am not willing to pay the crazy premium price they are going for now. My BFR and Redhawk 475's are great, but I tend to load them like a mid-range 480 anyway. Recently, during my downsizing venture, I considered selling my 7.5" SRH 480, and then I got my senses back. I'm particularly happy with a red dot on mine for whitetail at the distances I find them and for just shooting fun.

The number of 480 bullets in my basement has been in a steady decline. The odds of my backyard becoming a lead mine in the future is on the rise though.

I'm not selling or giving them away. Am shooting them away, into the backyard. Was being cute, probably didn't pull it off well. Shares in the future lead mine, in the backyard, can be had cheap now. Edited.. A fresh mind, another day, aaah ! BushHog, you have some Speer to part with ? I cleaned out another members stash some time back, and am good.

I picked up the Alaskan. Now the wait begins for brass... Congrats, you did well but should that horrible wrist wrenching forehead smacking recoil become more than you can bear PM me! Again, congrats you did well. Wait for brass? Do you have some on order? If you have no brass I have some cut .475 I'll send you, PM me.

Basically it comes out looking like an oversized GP100. Very nice looking job. I've seen one in 500 Linebaugh, but the finances just weren't there.

gnappi,
What a great offer! I really appreciate it! Luckily, I've enough projects to keep me busy for a while. Hopefully, it won't be a 2 year wait for the next run of 480 brass. If so, I'll consider having this one converted.
Thank you!

I got lucky and recently found some Speer .475s, 30 of them. Finally I get to try my Ruger SRH480! Yesterday I followed a recipe from Alliant’s website using these with 18 grains of 2400. Hopefully the 15 I loaded with new Starline brass work as advertised. Won’t be able to try them for a couple weeks though. In the meanwhile my search for and Hornady .475s continue… hopefully Hornady makes those again.

So far, for some years now, Missouri Bullets has ALWAYS had their 330gr RNFP. PC'd or regular cast/lubed.
