As predicted my MKII HB Beat my K 22 Masterpiece. Both gun's shoot a lot better than I do. And this is more a test of which do I shoot better than which gun is more accurate. I Shot at 65 ft of a sleeping bag rest. With 3 types of ammo. The Ruger put 10 rounds of CCIs 40 grain STD velocity ammo into 2 inches, And 5 of those into.85. The Smith 2.63 with that load.
Armscor 36gr High Velocity HP went into 3.3 inches from the MKII And The Smith did 3.34 with 5 right at an inch.
Federals 40 grain Auto match load that says 1200 fps on the box put 10 into 2.13 inches from the Revolver.
And 2.692 with 5 into 1.5 inches. Bill Ruger's masterpiece. My guess is Cataract surgery would tighten the groups up a lot. I had a couple hangups with the automatic. And I think I will drive out to Cabella's and look at MK IVs tomorrow. One with a Threaded barrel so I could put a suppressor on it. I would ge a kick out of shooting a few rounds in my Basement in Liberal Portland...tj

I have the MK IV you described. It is a fine weapon but a competent smith doing a good trigger job would help it a lot. I wonder if there is anyone specializing in trigger jobs on these?
Great writeup. I have a suppressed CZ 22 rifle and that AutoMatch ammo is the best out of it. It even beat out a couple high end match offerings.

I love everything 22. Please allow me to drift a little here.
Colt , Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Browning, and Hi Standard have all made superb 22's. I got totally hooked for several years and tried to acquire one of each. I wound up with several of each.
Semi-autos: My start was with a Government Competition Ruger Mark II with slab-sided ss barrel. With a red dot at 25 yards, it shot under an inch groups all day if I did my part. I think it was HS next with its Model E; and can that baby shoot even better, as do their other Olympic models. I never did find HS's 22 revolver, but I'm still looking. Of course the Browning Medalist is not only beautiful, it has excellent accuracy. The Nomad is a sweet semi as well. The Colt semi-autos really got me. From the Pre-Woodsman pencil barrels to the Match Targets, all are fun shooters, even their new Cadet. Smith & Wesson's semi-auto 41 is hard to beat for accuracy. It is often seen at competitions. Revolvers: I think my first revolver was the Ruger Single Six and what a great place to start. It was just right; fit, accuracy, weight, balance, grips, and price. It has a nice cowboy feel to it as well. On the other hand, the SP101's trigger gave me fits. Next came the Colt Diamondback, which still has a special place in my heart. I just love the liquid blue that Colt did on some of their Snake guns. The size and balance of the Diamondback just fits me to a T. The frame size is perfect. It's accuracy is awesome; but unfortunately so is its price. I feel lucky that I got mine before the prices doubled. Colt also made some Trooper's and Official Police's that are really nice. I never did find an Officer's Model. Dan Wesson made a beast; a monster; and called it a VentHeavy 22. Mine has an 8" barrel and may be the biggest 22 revolver ever made. It can shoot lights out accuracy with what feels like Zero recoil. Smith & Wesson's 22 are legendary. Their model 17 and 18 are superb shooters. They both exude the K frame goodness.
Now back to Ruger Mark series 22 triggers. I purchased a VOLQUARTSEN trigger replacement for my Mark II and could not have been happier. They also offer kits for making the Ruger Mark series disassembly and reassembly a lot easier if you need that kind of thing.

Friend was on the Marine Corps pistol team for several years hack in the late 1980s and early 90s. He said that their Ruger 6 7/8" Governmant Model .22s would outshoot the S&W Model 41s with Match Ammo when tested head to head in a Ransom Rest. I've got three MKIIIs, all the Hunter Model. 4.5", 5.5" and a 6 7/8" with fluted barrels. Pulled the upper off the 5.5" and replaced it with a 4" Tactical Solutions upper for use with a suppressor. Later I picked up a .22/45 MKIII LITE that is just perfect for suppressor use... 6 7/8"...tack driver... 4.5"...wonderful balance... 5.5" with the TACSOL upper... TacSol AXIOM Titantum... ...don't have any pics of the LITE right now... Bob

Note long ago I gave $200 for this Smith. I knew absolutely nothing about them but a Smith at $200 seemed like a minor risk. It is a shooter. This at 25 yards with a Sightron Red Dot.

The second gun I bought after I turned 21 was a Ruger MKII Govt Target model with 6-7/8” barrel. I paid $350 for it.
I taught my wife how to shoot with that pistol. That pistol has taught many people how to shoot a handgun, most had never shot any kind of gun before.
My wife’s sister learned to shoot with that pistol, after about 30 minutes with it, she was able to hit a quarter at about 40’.
My boys are learning to shoot handguns and that is their favorite pistol, it’s still too heavy for them to shoot off hand but they do well with it off of a sandbag.
I would never consider selling that MKII, too many awesome memories with it.

Sorry just saw this. My LGS in Texas (I am in north Idaho for the summer) just posted a shorty of the same piece with box, paperwork and seven magazines for $250. They have put it away until I return.

The only 22 of any sort I own is a Taurus tx22. I shoot steel challenge with it and can't complain about it's abilities.
I've thought about adding a mkIV longer barrel for squirrels. Following this thread with interest.

I have an old pre 17 K-22 that was my fathers gun. I honestly believe if I dropped it would still tear a joke through any bullseye. 6 inch barrel and one of the most accurate revolvers I ever shot!

The Browning Challenger was the first handgun I ever shot in about 1970.
