. AS to Model 17 cylinder "dropping in"...some do but most need to be fitted. One does have to make sure that the cylinder assembly is of the same type as some cylinders had the gas ring on the cylinder and others on the yoke. rjm52: "assuming" MY INABILITY TO GET 1 OF MY SPARE 22lr CYLINDERS TO FIT ON THE MODEL 48 CRANE IS A "gas ring" ISSUE: CAN IT BE REMEDIED/OVERCOME? IF YES, HOW?

The S&W 48-4 started production in 1977. That was the model that moved the gas ring from the yoke to the cylinder.

I'm not a gunsmith but the guy I use is a retired LEO factory trained armorer. I know he had to convert one of my cylinders to adapt to the crane but not sure what he did.
He is fishing in Alaska till the end of August or I would give you his number...
