What can y’all tell me about these guns? I am working on a trade for a 6” barrel model circa 1960 in about 95-98% condition. I bought a couple thousand rounds of .22 Mag ammo when Reed’s had the great sale on Federal 30 gr V Shok ammo but sold my FA 97 and Contender barrel in the caliber to help with some medical expenses. I am now in need of a good squirrel gun and like the velocity of the mag rounds out of a pistol over the long rifle.

Excellent guns and the early guns like those usually aren't hit or miss quality.
Mine is Excellent and I love the K-Frames.
Think you'll like it!!!

I do love a K frame also. I have a 16-4 and it is a blast. I am slowly going away from the N frames. I will be keeping the 610 because of the caliber but I have a 29-3 that will be traded for the 48. I think I will come out on top in this deal.
If S&W comes to their senses and offers a K frame 10mm (5 shot is fine) I am all in, lock or not!

I think a 4" model 48 would be one dandy packing gun if I could just find one. On the street or in the woods it would handle 99% of anything out there. I remember a write up by Paco Kelly talking about carrying a 22 magnum & dispatching several feral dogs, etc with his. I believe he used a semi auto, can't think of the model but similar to the auto mag. I would like the model 48.

I’m on the lookout for a 4” M48. My brother (by a different mother) Bart got one of the new ones with the internal lock. They are consistently looked down upon, but his is a fantastic revolver.

Thank you for the link. I have used the 22mag on ground hogs my whole life from a rifle. Guess I will get one of those tools and start trying with the revolvers.

Nice grab...60s vintage guns from S&W are the best...
Have had 48s in 4", 6" and 8 3/8"....the long barrel shot like a rifle... All of them had extra .22 Long Rifle cylinders fitted to them. Also had both an 18 and 17 with .22 Magnum cylinders fitted...
About the only negative is sticky extraction on most guns...poslishing the chambers usually helps...

Will a model 17 .22 LR cylinder drop in?

Since the 22 wmr is larger diameter don’t you always want to fit the magnum cylinder to the lr gun? Otherwise your bullets are undersized…

...you are actually better off going up than down...
..22 LR is .2225..... .22 Magnum is .224. 0.0015 difference. The Magnum rounds being "squeezed down" are a lot more accurate than the .22 LR skidding down the bore. Almost everyone who has dual cylinder 48s on the S&W Forums state they are not as accurate as their 17s when both are shooting Long Rifle ammo.
I currently own the following with an extra Magnum cylinder: Model 18 Model 35 Model 63 ...and had a Model 17.
Accuracy is excellent with both cylinders, no pressure related problems...
The only problem is that there are way fewer Model 650/651, 51, 48 and 648 cylinders on the market than Long Rifle cylinders...
Ruger, Colt and S&W all use .224 bore for their dual cylinder guns and are not known for their stellar accuracy with LR ammo. USFA and FA fit Magnum cylinders to their LR guns...
AS to Model 17 cylinder "dropping in"...some do but most need to be fitted. One does have to make sure that the cylinder assembly is of the same type as some cylinders had the gas ring on the cylinder and others on the yoke.

I HAD A 6" MODEL 48 THAT I PERSONALLY FITTED A MODEL 17 CYLINDER TO BACK AROUND 1978. DESPITE THE BORE SIZE DIFFERENCES, THE 22lr WAS VERY ACCURATE. IN THE EARLY PART OF THE 21st CENTURY I (STUPIDLY) SOLD THE REVOLVER TO MY Compadre JIM PERRIN FOR A MEASELY $300. JIM IS ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS SINCE THE LATE 1940's BUT IF I HAD TO DO IT OVER AGAIN I WOULD NOT HAVE SOLD IT.
I HAVE ANOTHER 6" MODEL 48, AND HAVE A COUPLE OF 22lr CYLINDERS IN MY PARTS BOX BUT NEITHER WILL SLIP ONTO THE MODEL 48 CRANE, don't know why, BUT IN 22lr 95% PLUS OF THE TIME I SHOOT A RUGER SINGLE SIX (LATELY MOSTLY A BISLEY) SO I AM NOT REALLY HANDICAPPED.
