Sixshot and I visited briefly about the use of Longshot in handguns recently. I have a supply of it for use in the 500 S&W, and looking at data for it in the 454, it’s intriguing. Has anyone used it in the 45 Colt/44 Mag/454 Casull, particularly with 300 gr +/-?

Following Brian Pearces load data from his mid level 45 colt handloader article last year. I load 11.3g Longshot with both mp 270saa and mp 308k. The 308k load is my most accurate 45 colt load for me offhand. The 308k runs near 1100. It's not super hot rod but it's good to shoot. The full house 45 loads are no fun for me to shoot and they beat my guns up too much. The mid level loads feel right to me. I shoot the 308k in my full size guns and the 270saa in my midframes. The 308k is too long for the midsframes without deep seating. Longshot meters really well for me in my lee perfect measure.

My favorite practice load in a BFR 454 is a 280 gr LFN coated bullet and 14 gr Longshot for 1200 fps. It’s enough of a load to get your attention, but not enough to beat you up. Very accurate. Hunting loads switch to a 300 gr jacketed bullet and either #9 or 296 at around 1500+ fps.

Yeah, I am going for something that doesn’t rock my on my heels quite like it used to. My favorite practice load in a BFR 454 is a 280 gr LFN coated bullet and 14 gr Longshot for 1200 fps. Longshot & 300 Grain cast coated bullets work great for me in both 45 Colt & 454 Casull. I shot the other day, with 45 Colt, first with 13 grains of Longshot & a 250-grain plated, & then with a 300-grain coated bullet with 11 grains of Longshot, they were very close in velocity. I did not write down velocities, but was shocked and it was with my Lab Radar, so I am confident it was right. It made me think about what John Linebaugh had in his writings on his website, about how cast bullets can seal better and are more efficient, I do know the plated bullets are .451 not .452 as the cast are and so that may affect the sealing of the bore too. I just never thought a heavier bullet with less powder could go just as fast, both were accurate, and had I not had the Lab radar I would have never known about this.

My cast bullets are powder coated. Longshot has proven a winner for me in 45 colt.

Mp 454-640 on 11gr Longshot is great in my 4-5/8" Blackhawk. Haven't chronographed it yet but it shoots 1-1/2" at 25yds offhand without much recoil.

I burn a lot of Longshot in revolvers and my one 10mm 1911. I really need to give it another try in the 480 Bisley with the Miha HP.

I like Long shot, You don't need a lot of it to get very good velocity, and it is cleaner than Unique. Not a first choice to get a max velocity from a given round, for economical 3/4 power loads in 44 and 41 mags it is a great powder...tj

Sure is, I really like it in the 45 Colt and 454 for easy shooting accurate loads.

Works great for lighter bullets in 44 mag and 45 Colt, and any bullets in 41 mag in the 1000 - 1200 fps range.
