Very well thought out carry rig Mackay & I think I'm a charter member of the 5 out of 6 club! Most times I seem to be packing a single action of some sort but on the occasions when I do strap on one of the double actions it's usually my 3" 44 special 696 or the 45 colt mountain gun, I feel pretty well armed with either & like Bob I prefer to shoot both in double action mode. I've watched Bob make 50 yd hits on ground squirrels going double action, he's a practiced hand!

One year I invited Tyrone (Contender) one of his friends Sam, Glenn Swaggart, & Tank Hoover out for a hunt & Tyrone had a 45 Vaquero that he said wasn't shooting very good, I figured it was that North Carolina humidity. So, taking some of my own handloads all of us retired to the range & shooting from the Keith reclining position I sent 5 down range, don't think it was 25 yds, more like 20 or just a bit more. Anyway they looked pretty good & I turned & fired the sixth one at one of the steel plates knowing my habit of ruining a good group. I don't have the target but Tyrone does & it was pretty good! I've tried for a while to buy that old beat up, rusted, bent barreled Vaquero every since but he won't budge & I think the target is under his pillow. The Keith #452424 & 9.0 of Unique cured the bellyache of that Vaquero real quick!

It is superbly accurate and gives me a lot of firepower in a standard (9mm/40 frame) and is easy enough to conceal when not on the trail. nice shootin at 27..................... Don't be fooled by a pic of a couple nice groups! Here is a perfect example. I actually posted this over on the Campfire. I was fatigued from shooting some heavy loads (325 grain .45 Colt at 1150) through my Blackhawk and something else, that I can't remember right now. Anyways, I went to shoot a couple groups with the G22 and these +P 170 grain SWCs, as they are becoming a favorite of mine. What I found out quite quickly was that I was fatigued from shooting the heavies and both the size of the groups and point of impact showed it. My hands had taken enough of a thrashing with the .45 Colt loads that I was not doing well in controlling the recoil, and in both groups, I was shooting to the left. The gun shoots dead center at 25 yards, so I know that was a ME problem and not a gun issue. In addition to the poor recoil management, I had poor trigger control as well. Once I saw the targets, I knew it was time to stop, as all I was doing was wasting ammo and time. A man's gotta know his limitations..

41 Magnum...I too prefer having the DA available over a pure SA so I carry the lightweight Taurus Tracker SS in 4". Been packing the Winchester factory 250 grain platinum tips.

When horseback it's always a revolver. Either my .44 special, or I may start packing the new SBH with 4.5" barrel depending on whether or not I'm riding in an area with grizzlies and wolves. When fishing or hiking, I lean towards my FN509 with a chest holster.

Went down the road to the Freedom Arms factory yesterday to drop of my 83 .454 and 97 .45 Colt to get the action job treatment with 3lb trigger pull and replaceable firing pins etc. While visiting with Bob Baker I asked him what his backup sidearm is and he said his “oh s**t gun” is a Model 83 .454 Casull 4.75” barrel with fixed sights. Thought that was pretty cool to hear.
