Minimum carry while out hunting, Ruger only 45Colt , or 454. Going to start carrying a 500JRH, both long barreled scoped and as a 5” octagon SA custom belt gun. I would rather have more than I need, than need more than I have! My motto is: “Over built is under rated”. Than includes firepower. That being said, I only carry a 22 mag on my tractor and logging grapple at the ranch. Then again all I see are coyotes, while on equipment. A nice walking around gun, city and country side is a S&W mountain gun in 41 or 45 Colt. Both stoked full loads, for these guns.( which is 75% of my ruger only load)

My personal minimum is a 44 mag in either a 4-in 629 or a 3-in Red hawk. Both of those get monolithic solid copper bullets. Otherwise we're stepping it up to 45 Colt or 500 Linebaugh with LBTs. That said, I know quite a few people who work a ranch where grizzlies are regular occurrence and they carry 10 mm. I'm not saying it's the best choice but it's inexpensive for ranch hands and it takes a lot of debris for a Glock to stop running. And I do know of one grizzly that is no longer with us because of a face-off with a 10 mm. I don't have the link for it right now, but there's a really good web page that has numerous accounts of large bear encounters and it's all classified by cartridge. Pretty enlightening.

The roughest country I hunt(ed) in is sheep country here in AK. Walk-in backpack hunts for 7-12 days 10-20 miles off the road or from the airplane. I never carried a backup gun. Everywhere else I go whether it be camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, berry pickin I pack the 4" 454 Redhawk. and the bug dope!!

My favorite is this old highly experienced 357 magnum. It's a couple of months older than me so it is my sentimental favorite woods companion.

I usually start my annual flea/tick season kick-off thread about now. LOL. I miss ColdTriggerFingers wisdom when these threads come up. Does anyone here, have news of him ? From my stash, the M69 n 4 3/4" BSBH 480 are the back ups, get off me, go to the outhouse guns.

I’ve read the study you speak of a few times and if it’s the one I’m thinking of its conclusion was that handguns across the board have a track record of having deterred or stopped black and grizzly/brown bear attacks 97% of the time. Here in Wyoming I personally know three people attacked by grizz, all survived and all killed the bear, two with rifles (.300WM and 50cal black powder) and one with a revolver (.44Mag). In Montana a year or two ago a gentlemen dispatched an attacking grizz with a 10mm. I like your personal choices. And I asked this question of you all genuinely to see what folks find comfort and utility in during trying terrain and times. Very cool to everyone’s responses. I carried a Glock 20 10mm last two seasons but after more and more practice with it and regular jamming issues I made the decision to commit to revolvers, DA and SA.

That is such a cool Redhawk, Snyd. Who built it for you? Bowen? And then you got it Magnaported? Or am I way off? I just had Bowen convert my .44Mag Redhawk to his “Kodiak” version, but I now lust after a .45 or .454 conversion too…. Yours is dreamy. Any info appreciated. Thanks, Perry

Which do you value more there - the 454 or the bug spray? Believe it or not probably the bug dope. When it comes to being Bear Aware the gun is the last resort. With the bugs it's the ONLY resort. You can't scare em off. I have a good friend that was a bush pilot here in Alaska for over 20 years. One agency he flew for he told the new pilots that if they ever went down that they'd find them, that wouldn't be an issue. He told them to always have a bottle of bug dope in their pocket because if it took them a day or two to get to them they'd be stone crazy and sucked dry if they didn't have it. True it is and true story.

Thanks, Perry It started life as a 4" 45 Colt Redhawk. I put the 454 cylinder in it from a Super Redhawk 454. Pretty much a drop in fit. I ground/sanded the billboard and ".45 Colt" off the barrel, put the HiViz site on it and had it magna-ported. Went through a few grips and finally settled on the Uncle Mikes. Some guys like the pachmayrs. It's my "Oh $h1T" gun. I pack it in a Simply Rugged pancake strong side mostly but cross draw carrying a backpack.

I imagine it is a blast to shoot! How does the Redhawk carry in the Simply Rugged (Sourdough?) Pancake holster with your backpack waistband on? I ask because I plan on carrying a Redhawk .44Mag at times whilst backpack hunting and that holster gets mentioned here a lot. Thank you!

I have the retention strap on the Pancake mainly to hold the gun in it when it's not in use but the rig is ready to go on the belt with ammo pouch. When carrying strong side I undo the strap and tuck it away. The guns stays put nicely and pops out with a good yank. When carrying crossdraw I don't actually use the "cross draw" belt slot and I keep the strap snapped. Quick to draw by using my offhand to yank the strap. Anyway, this is what works for me for what I do. Guys that spend a lot time in chest waders usually want a chest rig off some sort. I don't have the Chesty Puller system since I don't really have a need for it.

As mentioned above, I do like the Glock 20 but grip angle is my primary gripe. That said the trijicon orange from sight does help remedy that as it draws my eye and adjusts my grip without thought.
