I have a Winchester 1892 coming from Turnbull. I learned that they used clear cerakote to protect the color case hardened parts. I didn't care for that because I am going to use the gun and I want the case hardening to wear commensurate to the rest of the gun. So, I elected to have it lacquered instead. They told me that's what they put on their restored firearms.
I was told that lacquer is what is on Doug's 1886 that he's hunted all over with, but it's been recoated several times. Course Doug uses his gun harder than i'll use mine, so i'll probably have quite a while before i'll have to be concerned with re-lacquering.
Anyways, I am looking for advise on how best to care for the traditionally lacquered color case hardened guns. What solvents will not harm it? I assume I should avoid all solvents, even hoppes 9?
Remoil, Ezzox, and other CLP's are probably what i'll be wanting to use. Does anyone have a specific one they know is compatible with the lacquer? Or, one they know is not?
Does anyone now what year Winchester started lacquering their CCH guns? Did they lacquer the receiver only, or all the CCH parts?
Thanks for reading.
John

Those questions are probably best answered by Turnbull’s since they are probably most knowledgeable with the lacquer they use.

Doug told me Rem-Oil. That being said I use mostly Clenzoil on all my guns. Blued or Color case hardened.

Stay away from anything with acetone, including lacquer thinner.

If it were mine, I'd use Flitz gun and knife wax - I use it on all my guns.

Ezzox is a good one. As is Clenzoil, which I use the most.
Be mindful of what goes on the wood. A stock maker advised against using any kind of wax if I thought that I might want to touch up the finish on the stock. The wax will get into the pores and hinder touch ups.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've never heard of clenzoil. I'll have to check that out.

Who'd Doug sell to, his kids? Hopefully someone that was involved in the process previously.

I know that Sara Turnbull is still there, and her emails say "owner" so I'm guessing it's her and her husband, I forget his name.
