I pulled into a pasture that I had never been in before & got the surprise of my life. I've been hunting Rock Chucks for over 60 years & I'm sure I've never seen as many as I did this afternoon. There's no way I could count them but an educated guess would put the number I saw in about 90 seconds at over 50 Chucks! I was talking to the owner as I was pulling in & then I started getting a little bit excited & he started laughing & then he said, what do I owe you, he always says that. I said nothing & he said, well let me buy you some ammo & I politely declined.
It really was a sight to see & I've been doing this for a very long time, it was just nuts! For sure they were going to get this whole hay field (alfalfa) if I didn't help him out. By accident I had drove right into the middle of them so they were running in all directions & I was right on top of them. I will adjust my game tomorrow, I could use a little back up. Anyway I had kind of messed it up I was so close, I shot 6 with the 32/20, my fun gun & also the Contender 223 & then I needed to get out of there & regroup. For some reason I got a tight one stuck in the cylinder of the 32/20, just enough to bind the cylinder, so I took it out of the gun but I need to align the ejector rod & I didn't have any tools with me so I started to put stuff away & I looked behind me & there was a portable Perfume pump walking between 2 old cars....Skunk! I eased out my Walther 9mm carry gun & tippie toed over a bit at a time when he wasn't looking & finally I was 15 yds away, close enough for me, I didn't want him to hit the spray button.
I waited for him to stop & turn broadside & I sent a 140 gr FN solid his way, breaking his back in the 6" grass, I didn't notice any stinky but he was still moving so I turned out his lights with a head shot, yippee! A big old Skunkster & he didn't get me, that makes me the winner!
