Coming home from range with only 22lr in car, came across badly injured doe on shoulder of road. Crushed pelvis, needed to be euthanized. Not sure best place to deliver quick, human kill; put target solid between earhole and corner of eye. Seemed to do the job. Never shot a deer in the head before, so checking for input.
Correct placement?

Any easy entry to the brain bucket will work. The ear is one option. The back of the head where the skull and spine meet is another spot.

Center of the back of the head, or the ear.
I would check with your local game commission or DCNR of some sort to see if you're legally allowed to euthanize an animal for and discharge the weapon that close to the road.

Animal Control will respond (eventually), but allows citizens to euthanize an animal if you’re willing. Game animals cannot be removed. |

Sounds like you did the right thing the right way. Never fun stuff but it's the humane thing to do.
Take a look at cross sections of deer skulls in the meantime. It'll help you visualize your point of aim from different angles. From the side you did right- between the eye and ear the base of the ear. The brain is higher and further back than some imagine. Easy to shoot a deer in the sinuses or under the brain case if you don't know better.

My wife's brother wanted to run off a deer that was eating the plants in his suburban front yard. He used a .22 pellet rifle and shot the deer in the front of the skull. It dropped dead on the spot.

I believe it. My Crossman break barrel 22cal gets 1056fps over the chronograph. It'll completely penetrate a coyote broadsides at 35 yards. |

My Great Grand Father homesteaded 40 acres and his nearest neighbors was about 2 miles down the trail. The neighbor had a mean rank bull and poor fences. He said it was monthly job to drive this mean bull home. Once the bull shows up again during deer season so he grabbed the shotgun and starts driving the bull home. He was 1/2 mile from home and shot a deer. Wanting to get it home he got the great idea to let the bull get 60 yards out and going the right direction and Boom with a load of birdshot. few weeks later he saw the neighbor and during the chat got told the bull can home and got sick. The bull balls got infected and swollen then died! Great Grand Dad alway laughed when he told us the story. |

It dropped dead on the spot. ***** grandpa.... this description equally describes head shots made with .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire and .17 Rimfire which lost deer. A shot which follows the ear canal to the brain may require the least projectile energy. While there are various types of brain shot, there should be nothing casual about their administration. Example: a shot high in the brain which doesn’t reach deep enough may not result in loss of consciousness, nor impair breathing. David Bradshaw |

Last fall a young buck was hit by a car in front of my pharmacy. He was in the parking lot. Put suppressor on Glock and dispatched him with a 9mm and customer helped me load him in the back of my truck. In WV it is considered the ethical thing to do.

Before I retired from active duty, I was driving along the highway in front of Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. I came across multiple cars stopped along the road, and a deer that had been struck and had a broken leg. I was transporting my 1911 .45 ACP to the range in the next county, and immediately pulled over, intending to finish off the deer. Then I had an epiphany! I would make the 5 o'clock news if I shot that deer! I said to myself 'Self, don't be a dumb ass. You'll be arrested if you shoot that deer! You're in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Maryland, NOT Free America!' So, I drove on and that poor deer suffered until either an LEO or game warden euthanized him. Probably an hour or so later.
