Seems to be 33 FPS Difference in velocity with 1 1/4" more barrel and between the 4 3/4" and the 6"

The 7 1/2" is 1 1/2" longer than the 6" and was 31 FPS difference

The load could be loaded higher but I see no reason. This load will exit through shoulders on Asian buffalo 🐃 and kicks hard enough

Any perceived recoil difference between the guns?

Some people claim a shorter barrel recoils more. Others say the long barrel leads to more torque and recoil.

I'm in the camp that fells the higher velocity of the longer barrel kicks harder. Especially if shooting a 300 grainer near or at 1700 FPS

I can add this to the topic from another review of ammunition…….my personal velocities are rounded to the nearest 5fps.
Federal HammerDown 44mag 270gr. Advertised velocity 1715fps,
20” Marlin 1894…..1710fps
7.5” Ruger SBHH……1350fps,
4 5/8” Ruger OMSBH…….1270fps
3” SW 629……1190fps

Neat, for John to compare Model 83 barrel lengths at same time with one load.

John.... with the Freedom Arms .454 Casull, despite lower velocity, for me the shorter barrels kick more fiercely. As the vast majority of recoil impacts hand after bullet exit, I feel the immediacy of recoil worse from a short barrel. As for muzzle whip, a silhouette pipe on a big bore single action rather emphatically inclines to vertical. But the muzzle whip of the short barrel is more fierce.

I would love to see somebody shoot thay Buffalo Bore 340 grain 44 Mag,
In the same fasion. I need to get my chronograph ready. I just need an adapter, to attch it to the tripod> Lost mine someplace. I could go 4 5/8ths SBH 5.5 Redhawk, and 7.5 inch SBH Bisley.
However, Using the freedom arms, is better beacuse of the tighter tollerence in CYL gap and chambers ...tj

Particularly interesting because it was Freedom Arms. By far the most consistent tolerances from gun to gun.

I've tried this with other revolvers and actually seen the shorter barrels produce higher velocity.

There's lots more involved in revolver velocity than barrel length.

I've seen Rugers with under .002" to .013" barrel gaps. Much harder to compare with those inconsistencies.

This test showed us what effects barrel length really has when everything else is the same...

David I agree, sadly I only chrono’d once in the 3”. I now wish I’d done more, but was not planning on shooting in the 3” much with the load. Since I considered it more of a top end hunting load than a everyday carrying load.

I also agree there is more to velocity than barrel length when it comes to revolvers.

Would be cool if that stayed constant but I’ve had 7.5” FAs shoot same load faster than a 10” FA. All barrels aren’t the same. Some are just faster or slower than others.

Same thing in the rifle world. Some barrels are just faster.

Find a fast barrel that shoots well and keep that gun.
