Opening up a spring turkey season here on Long Island for the first time. Handguns are legal with shot from #2 to #9. What handgun and gauge ( I’m thinking only .410 is handgun legal?) I’m guessing single shot only?

I’d check regs and make sure, if any handgun is legal a 38-357 with a wadcutter would be great for a body shot. I’ve made shotshells for most of my big bores and feel confident enough to head shoot a bird at 10-15 due to pattern size. My shotshell for the 500Max holds right at an ounce of shot, 435gr. If you’re decoying and calling getting that close isn’t too difficult but doing that and trying to raise a gun and shoot is tough due to movement. Having someone else do the calling makes it much easier, then you just have your gun pointed at the decoy ready to go.
I mixed 8’s, 6’s and 4’s in my loads made specifically for turkeys, if you’re buying 410’s I’d say 6’s or 4’s.

No reason to use a 12 gauge anymore!!!!

Was unaware of such in 410, that sounds like a good combination weight for penetration and lots of shot for impact smack. My using bigger shot was for penetration which the weight of tungsten would provide. Sounds like all you gotta do is go buy and hunt.

I’ve been lucky enough to take 6 or 7 with my thompson. I have always used Remington 3” lead number 5 shot. 23 yards and under is 100% one shot kills. Did light testing with the tungsten #9s that looked like it would maybe get close to 30 yards but I need to verify that. In the Thompson I have to re zero for elevation with every load. I put a shimmed skinner sight instead of the rear blade a few years ago and painted the front sight yellow over white. It’s fairly fast for target acquisition. Also, no need for fancy plastic decoys, I made a crappy tail fan using loose tail feathers and duct tape. Made an exaggerated Jake tail and taped it to a spatula. Toms tend to get really mad at the ratty looking Jake and come in hot. I’ve crawled in close behind it over open ground, and also had them come to kick ass where I was. Closest kill with the thompson was seven paces still coming hot. I’ll post a pic when I can figure out how. Turkey hunting with a 410 pistol is a ton of fun!

That’s turkey shooting. Not turkey hunting. Calling them into shotgun range is my idea of turkey hunting. But with that said I would Like to shoot one fall turkey hunting with a .22 Single Six sometime. Legal in PA I think for fall hunting.

You've obviously not tried shooting a turkey in the head with a revolver.

No smaller than 8's if you're following the rules. lol (I think it used to be 7's not too long ago) No bullets for turkey in NY. Some of the LI area will be archery only. Some using the lottery system, some not. I've seen it written many times that a rifle or handgun can NEVER be taken afield on the island. Though a quick look on the website mentions not using bullets for handguns, there doesn't seem to be any mention about LI. I'm thinking it's an oversight and that handguns would still be a no go. NY sucks for "hunting laws" (shocker) because things seem to come and go from the rules, with no way to know or confirm. .410 used to be a no go. Now? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, maybe it's just not in the latest version of the website. I miss getting the big paper map every year.

Any gauge larger than .410 in a handgun isn’t legal since a handgun can’t be larger than .50 cal? Correct? Check the laws for sure since NYC/LI is a different world compare to upstate NY!!!!! But I’m sure it’s the same across the state.

Pretty sure, at least in the not too distant past, 410 was specifically named as a no go. Again with NY there's no list of laws/rules to easily read, there's just things we might happen to mention on the website. And as you know, NY is historically famous for the vagueness of how its laws are written, why would the DEC be any different.

You've obviously not tried shooting a turkey in the head with a revolver. Actually I've had the chance a couple of times. I was deer hunting with a 44 Spl. and had a flock of turkeys walk over my legs. I did raise the handgun up to aim at a few turkey heads (No, I didn't shoot any of them) with no notice of the turkeys. It was all I could do not to laugh out loud and scare them off. BTW, turkey feet are not comfortable on fairly unpadded legs, it did hurt some.
