Monday I looked out over my back hillside going down to the river to see a mink threading his way thru the steel targets and got a bigfoot type blurry pic of him. Today, watching a terror of a red squirrel rip around the yard. FAST !

We have a male and female gray fox that comes to visit almost daily around 10-11pm, for scraps in our backyard.

Saw 50+ deer in fields on way home from work yesterday evening. Hunting season over. Big temp drop. Got them out eating early.

Feeding cattle this evening and saw a pretty good sized heard of wild hogs out grazing on a wheat field.

I made ranches in 3 counties today. Absolutely nothing wanted to be shot in the face. I feel like I been cheated.

Animals are herded up now, after hunting season with their predators hungry and wanting to eat. Find them and you find a bunch...... and the rest of the area is EMPTY.

There was little to no mast crop here this year. The weather has been mild, only enough snow to plow once so far. Planning 3rd trip to the hills in , post hunting season now. Usually these trips, bears denned, a 22, kit gun kinda handgun would be considered fine, pests like red squirrels or porcupine that do damage are the target. Told wife before last trip, 2 weeks ago that the bears won't stay denned. She just told me, 'hood facebook group news, large bear in yard 3 miles from my house an hour ago. No mast, crops in.. lean grumpy bears.

Mild weather down here means snakes are active more often instead of denned up as well. Normally walking around in normal boots and shoes is no issue, but with cool evenings and warm days, they come out to lay in the roads and paths to soak up the warmth. No issues if they are harmless type, but hard to tell in the predawn or post dusk light, although I have seen more of our Big Black snakes recently as well. They are a treat to see, and I enjoy knowing they are still plentiful.

There's a big leaning pine of some sort in the front yard, half hollow and woodpecker hole peppered. This time of year there are one or more black snakes hibernating in it. My first knowledge of them here was an early mowing in late April when 4ft worth of black snake fell outta the tree and across my thighs. The John Deere doesn't have an eject seat, it did take a milisecond or so for brain to decide, non-poisonous.. Now some years down the road, I've carried them off the lawn before mowing, helped them across the street, etc.. They can get grumpy, but I'd never hurt one. Last spring 2, 2-3 ft ones were in the tree sunning. So a next gen in the works. The 6ft one a bit intimidating sometimes. A lot of reach to be aware of and on not so fast anymore.

They are very neat snakes and like you I’d not hurt one, and warn guests of doing so as well. It’s a definite no return if you harm one. I’ve never seen a small one, all 6ft. or longer. Having one drop onto lap would be quite startling to say the least, reminds me of story told by good friend in LA of having cottonmouth drop into johnboat, and screaming at passenger “DONT SHOOT THE SNAKE”

I believe our black snakes similar, but slightly different subspecies ? Yes, yours longer per what I've looked up, last time you mentioned them. Whatever thread that was ?
