....She surprised me the other day and mentioned an ethnic group we've never tried , German...
OK, this was twenty years ago, but in a shopping plaza, on the north side of Medina, there is (was?) a Bavarian restaurant, which hit the nail on the head with the meal I ordered there. I was privileged to "dine out" for a month in northern (West) Germany, on a huge exercise during the Cold War. I was in a rural area, so it was all gasthauses and inns. One place was defunct passenger plane, perched on a rise, near the top of a "mountain" (big hill) south of Hanover. Every meal was great, but I only paid for the one in the plane.
Everywhere I went, whatever bunch of old German guys hanging out would grab me and order me food and beer and talk my legs off. I had NO idea what they were saying, but they were happy, excited and emphatic about it. Schnitzel and Pils - LOCAL Pils, brewed at old, local monasteries. Didn't take long to develop a serious liking for the food. The place in Medina really took me back with the aromas and tastes. I don't think they served local Pils though.
Farther south, you're into "Amish Country" and there's a lot of "meat-n-potatoes"- type dining, but some of it borders German cooking, I suppose due to the Swiss influence? If anyone here is Swiss, German or Amish, please don't be offended if my little mind made a poor comparison there.

Hey Seminole! What restaurant in Lafayette? I go that way a couple of times a year and duck is a favorite for us. There was 2 awesome Thai restaurants in Lafayette but not sure now. It has been a couple of years.
Greek/Lebanese, Thai, Japanese, and I’ll eat anything in a taco!

Wish I'd have bumped into you when you were here! Might have at least crossed paths at a gun show, Medina being a large and popular one.
I'm guessing you might've been to the Log Cabin Shop, in Lodi, southwest of Medina? Such a wonderful store to wander in. Another good shop further south is Lehman's "non-electric hardware" store, in Kidron.
Anyone even passing through NE Ohio should see those two places. Eastern Ohio is MUCH more interesting than Western Ohio, for history, geography, geology, "kulcher,"...

After graduating from Kent State University in 1965 I taught for one year in Ohio than packed up the three kids in Diamond Dot in the Ford station wagon and headed for Idaho. So you are probably too young to have crossed paths. I spent a lot of time in the summers around Lodi and Homerville where my uncle had a farm. That's where I first learned to shoot with a Harrington and Richardson .22.

Oh, no shortage of Mexican dining around here. Just didn't get that far in listing things. The belt of glacial moraine dirt across NE Ohio and on across into NY Finger Lakes area is farms and plant nurseries and then vineyards. Lots of migrants just stayed and lots of Mexican dining. My fave dish here, Tres Mares, a 3 types of seafood and veggies and such. Tecate or Jallisco to drink.

JeffH, I know, been to those places. My garden hoe came from Lehmans. Think one of the Ithacaguns followed me home from Medina show years ago. My original Lee press and 54 Lyman Mtn Rifle from the Log Cabin shop.

This describes me a lot. I try to find all kinds of dishes & foods I haven't tried yet. I have a wide & varied palate. Miss Penny,, not as much. But she has come a LONG way in 30 years as to trying & enjoying stuff. We both cook, but often we find dishes we can't make at home due to various things. So,, we do enjoy finding dishes to enjoy in specific places.
For wild game & some of it exotic,, we found "Saskatoon Lodge" in Greenville SC. Elk, antelope, venison, bison, ostrich, kangaroo, duck, quail, New Zealand stag, to name some of the good stuff they serve. It's become a very favored restaurant of ours.

So, at the Das Schnitzel Haus, in Parma Ohio, I had the walleye baked in white wine/garlic, warm potato salad and green beans. Wife had a combo platter of veal schnitzel, ghoulash, and brat. We had perogie appetizer and strudel dessert. I brought a half duck dinner home along with leftovers of everything else. Round 2 soon. Burp.

This kinda went all over the place so I'll add. I've eaten at a number of good places all over, hereand abroad. Friday we went to get some lumber out of Day, Florida. There's not even a store in that town. Twenty minutes up the road is the Mayo Cafe, with a buffet. For lunch they had FIVE hot, fresh vegetables in the lineup. Collards, green beans, yams (no), corn off the cob, and lima beans. Add fried chicken, fried fish, chicken perloo and shepherds pie and cornbread. Yes, it rivals other places.

Ethnic or not, the one thing we strive for when eating out is a non chain restaurant. We love exploring mom & pop places. Have discovered some amazing food this way. From deep fried chicken livers to a superb bologna, cheese, and fried egg sandwich.
