My wife is a great meat and potatoes cook. Both our backgrounds similar, food tastes. So when dining out we need not order things she can make better. We search out the places that fill other niches. Say seafoods, or Italian and such. She surprised me the other day and mentioned an ethnic group we've never tried , German. Today we are crossing northern Ohio from near Penn line to S.W. of Cleveland to go to a large outdoors(gun shop) place to look for components and ? So the google search was on for German restaurants between here and there. A visit to Das Schnitzel Haus later today. I see duck on the menu ! In the city of Parma. Oh, on those days we just cannot make up our mind, we always default to chinese. Every few months, we will go on a pizza adventure, trying a pizza place we've never been. You ?

We venture out a lot for foods of all varieties (sushi, Chinese, japanese, tai, Puerto Rican, etc.) but I don't usually gravitate to Italian. I guess sli just think spaghetti which I can boil in 8 minutes at home. But none of it will ever replace meats on a smoker/grill with veggies.

There's a Mediterranean restaurant in town that we go to every few months, excellent food, there is more to Italian than just spaghetti, pasta dishes, they have a pork chop that's to die for, not to mention the seafood.

I like to fire up the smoker all the time ,occasionally we go out to eat. But not bragging, most of it can’t beat what I do at home and a lot cheaper

I like to fire up the smoker all the time ,occasionally we go out to eat. But not bragging, most of it can’t beat what I do at home and a lot cheaper Same here. Their steaks better be good if we're not doing them on the smoker at home.

You are missing the absolute best in ethnic foods, namely Mexican. I was in Germany and Italy touring gun factories about 35 years ago and found the best Italian food came from Germany. Never did try any what you would call German foods as the Italian stuff was so good. Actually Mexican, Italian, Chinese, and American are all too good. I'm no fan of Japanese or Thai or any of that kind of food.

Shot a european championship match in Greece many years ago, town was right in the coast. Fresh seafood was abundant, best food I’ve had in years. No beef to speak of but lots of excellent lamb and seafood.

There's not many types of food that aren't great coming from the right kitchen, nor many types that are good coming out of a bad kitchen.
I do try to order dishes I could never make at home. Some sauces alone are more work than any entire meal I might cook myself. Some foods require a whole different spice rack than I maintain, like Indian which is excellent once you find a good restaurant and the dishes you like. Some places are best to go with a knowledgable friend to help you order.
I am pretty averse to fishy flavors, but quality fresh fish raw or cooked properly is excellent. Just not a lot of wiggle room for me on a fishy taste.
It's unfair to say a food is bad until you've had the best version of it.

Being of German descent & having spent almost 8 years there in the Army, I always enjoy a taste of the old country. There is an Austrian restaurant in KC that’s supposed to be incredible. A Lieutenant Colonel I served with many years ago retired in the area & says he & his German wife absolutely love it, so it’s on the list for us to check out. If you’re curious, Austrian cuisine is very similar to German, though not as heavy & slightly more “delicate”. Really just a regional variation of what we call German food.
Awesome Italian & Greek food in the Bundesrepublik also, thanks to all the post WW2 guest workers. An uncle there spent the first 20 years of his life there & speaks Greek like a native. Go out to dinner with Onkel Alvin & we’d be seated in a private room, no menus, cos they were piling the table with mama’s “not on the menu” dishes. No snort of Ouzo after, though. It was served with the meal & if your glass got below 1/2, someone would magically appear to fill it.
I discovered Lebanese food in Africa & man oh man can I put down some roasted goat, especially with a healthy dollop of peri peri sauce. Most “safe for non-Africans” restaurants catered to French expats & tourists. I like French cuisine, but expensive, poorly prepared African imitations are just a big nope. Fortunately, the Lebanese were to West Africa what the Italians were to the American northeast & we found good Lebanese joints in every country we went to. Not much Lebanese to be found anywhere near rural west-central MO, though 😆
Fortunately, a nice little Mexican joint opened in our little burg about a year ago. Family that runs it are great people, great food & their bar/margarita game is first class. They even invited us & the neighbors to their private family, staff & friends Christmas party. We eat there a minimum of twice per month, if not weekly, with the neighbors. We like the place & the people & given the lack of options out here in the boonies, we’re trying to do our part to support them.

We eat lamb, nearly every day… but we are food adventurers, if traveling, always want to go to someplace we don’t have local… like most good foods, no matter the nationality
But it hard to beat a good quality beef steak, off a grill

I hunt a lot between October and January, so as a vacation for my wife, we hit the road for a couple of weeks after deer season and go bar hopping. Oyster Bar hopping that is. We start at our favorite oyster bar in Apalachicola, Florida and hop from bar to bar along the coast to Galveston Bay, Texas and back to Apalachicola. To qualify as an oyster bar, you must be able to belly up to a bar and watch the oyster shucker as he or she shucks your oysters while you wait. Good conversation and cold beer add to the experience.
One year we were ready for a different taste on the way home and stopped at a seafood restaurant in Lafayette, Louisiana and tried their duck gumbo. Oh my! Now that restaurant is a favorite stop and Louisiana duck gumbo is as much enjoyed as oysters.
