This is my version of the Matthes Lion Hunter. It was designed for the bobtailed mini lions here, but I'd not be opposed to using it close range on a mountain lion. The full rig is not yet complete, as the lanyard and holster rig are a ways out, but ammo loading starts shortly. I've always found many of our American cartridge designations interesting, and don't actually know for sure how the .31 bores came to be named .32 caliber. I have assumptions, but if someone who knows cares to tell, I'm all ears. The pics need retaken outside, but today is a better day to be inside loading and hopefully get to the field before last light will see. Finally got my Bowen Single Six together.

Lovely piece, very well done as you would expect from those two master craftsmen.
How long is the barrel and what loads are you thinking of for it? Just curious you know...

That is pretty little blaster right there, a piece of functional fine art for sure. Also curious of the barrel length, does the picture make is look longer than it really is?

Goodness, a guy puts Bowen and Rowen together on a project and boy-howdy, do they manage to turn out a handsome rig. Love it!

That angle of pic always adds a bit of optical illusion of barrel stretch, but it actually is the longer 6.5" barrel option from Bowen. Way more ejector rod than needed for the little round, but the barrel style requires the super ejector and I'm glad for the little tad of extra weight anyway. I'm starting with mid range loads in an attempt to find a good field load that won't tear my ears up, but it will see some full house slightly compressed H110 loads later as well. This caliber is new ground for me as far as actual field use goes. I've always avoided it because my .32 H&R loving friends have always warned me about the high pressure ear blast of the round. The Clements 6 shot .38 Specials came to be simply for that reason, but I've decided to give the smaller bore a try now and see if I can find an acceptable load that's got enough power for close range predator calling that get's the job done without ruining hides, but I don't have to worry about hearing protection for just to fire a shot or two in the field. Any insight into that dilemma is welcome.

Well done! No doubt in my mind that the guys who named the 32 and 38 were related.

Well done! No doubt in my mind that the guys who named the 32 and 38 were related. X2! That's funny, especially because I had exactly the same thought awhile back. On the .32, I can see it maybe being a paper patch thing, or neck OD etc, but the .38 makes no sense to me.
