I used to own Ruger Alaskans in both chamberings(I guess I don't see the point of a 44 Magnum Alaskan). I found a deal on a 454 first and noticed that the grip really helped to cushion the recoil. A year or two later I found a 480 and realized that I felt a lot of steel gripframe when shooting it, even though it had the same cushioned grip. I should have thought to switch the grips around on both of them to see if the 480 lacks some cushion but I didn't. The 454 went down the road a couple of years ago.

If my hands were bigger, I'd still have mine. I went as light as 8.2grs of T.B., CCI350, and Missouri PC'd 340gr bullet. Don't laugh..think 44spec with another 100 grs of bullet and .046" of bore diameter. As heavy as one of the 385gr HP's pushed past 1200fs with A2400. It went to a nephew, twice my size with a Hi-Viz F/O front sight on it.

I'm going to have to get me one of those. Might be a bit harder to conceal than the chiefs special but it'll be fun for pumpkin busting.

I recognize the companion gun thing, have some of that here too. But IMHO, with the Alaskan it just makes sense to go with the one with the biggest hole in the end of the barrel. More thump for the bump.

...or... If one can't decide, just buy all three! I'm just pleased to see that the SRH fits in the same holster as the RH.

Shot a little 480 today. 5 shots at 25 feet. 400 grain Speer SP, 18 grains of H110, and a CCI 350. 4 inches high. Needs a taller front sight, a lighter bullet, or a faster bullet. Most likely a combination of the three.
