Trying to find the photo's but so far they haven't surfaced yet. Many years ago I had the very talented Dan Paul engrave a TC Encore frame for me. Dan was living in Blackfoot, Idaho & was native american but wasn't Bannnock/Shoshone, if I remember correctly he was from Oklahoma. He had done a lot of engraving on Freedom Arms guns & also on guns that my son had built, that's how I met him. He was living in a small trailer house in Blackfoot with a woman he had taken in & was doing his engraving at a small school desk with a single lamp overhead & wearing an optivisor with a cracked lens, true story. I was there with my son & while they were talking I was thumbing through a catalog & spotted a photo of a bull moose standing in a pond with cattails all around. That's what I wanted on my Encore, that photo. I laid a $100 bill on the desk & the catalog with the photo of the moose & said this is what I want. He said he could do it & that the $100 would be enough! I couldn't believe he was only going to charge me $100, I thought that was only going to be the down payment! Two or threee months went by & I got a phone call from the woman early one morning & she was talking very soft, I could barely hear her. She said my gun was finished & I could come & get it, she also said that Dan Paul was dead, he had committed suicide a few hours earlier! I won't tell the whole story but he was having lots of trouble with the woman's ex boyfriend & had put a single round in a revolver & tried Russian roulette, took him 2 tries to make it happen. The engraved moose was alive, I swear it's the most amazing animal scene ever. I did eventually trade it to a collector at one point. Inside the moose scene was a mountain man trapper that was hidden, also there was an Indian chief with a full head dress, also hidden. If she hadn't pointed them out to me I would never have known they were there. This was Dan Paul's trademark in engraving, hiding a scene within a scene, he was a master engraver. My son bought his engravers vise & most of his tools.

I had a friend growing up in the 80’s that did some very nice work, nice deep cut engraving not the shallow stuff I’ve seen so much lately. He had studied under Frank Hendricks in San Antonio, he did some very nice work. Every time I see work that looks similar to his I look for his initials, he stopped engraving in the early 90’s, couldn’t make a living at it. The 629 above is nicely done and shows nice deep relief work. He did a few revolvers for TPWD, retirees I think.

I have always admired the Ruger engraved RSSE guns, the history, detail, etc.,,, just not the modern day price tag. I’m a shooting/ accumulator enthusiast, not so much a collector. When I stumbled over the center gun SN# 30900 and in its current condition, I acquired it to get it engraved, but enjoy it. There is a batch of Engraved RSSE’s in the 30800 range and the engraving is what I would call middle of the road, referring to adornment. The Spanish guns being way to fancy for me. Trying to find an Engraver that will work off photo examples & drawings of the SN# 30800 range guns is what I think I want. I’m not trying to create an exact copy and most likely will do some sort of ram horn grips. Threads like this one really create the itch. My three flatgate era Single Six’s 6460- 4 digit w/ vintage stag. 30900- w/ premier loading gate (Engraving Candidate) 31813- palindrome
