Howdy all, new member here. Just wanted to say that discussions like this are exactly why I joined. I mean it's a rare individual who still carries a revolver anymore. A few years ago I decided to carry all the time and tried a variety of handguns and discovered that for me a double action 357 was the best compromise for daily carry. As a carpenter and building contractor doing anything from concrete to cabinets my life is very dusty. I specialize in off-grid custom homes in the Colorado mountains and spend most of my time at remote job sites and have had far more trouble with bears and rattlesnakes than people. So I use Rimrock's Keith's 358429 at 1130 fps from a 2 1/2" GP100 most of the time or the same bullet at 1000 fps from a 38 Special SP101 some times and a round of snake shot in the summer. I do think lighter hollow points are the best choice if 2 legged varmints are the primary concern. Oh, researching 38-44 loads and longshot powder in revolver calibers kept bringing me back to this forum. Thanks all.

I will say that the vast majority of manufacturers' R&D for defensive ammo goes into the 9 mm, so you could do a lot worse than a hammerless 9 mill snubby with several full moon clips.

I do agree with that. But I wish there were more options for a 9x19 revolver with a 9mm length cylinder and frame instead of a 357 length guns. Really misses out on some of the potential for a gun meant to be carried a lot, and hopefully never used.

If Smith made a revolver with the same alloy frame but in a short 45 ACP only configuration I would buy 2 .

RnD in defensive handgun rounds for self defense is a fine thing , but I bet the 135 grain Hornady ammo I use is as good as anything you might find in a 9mm. I like 9mms for either Higher mag capacity , I have 2 big 9s. Or My little Ruger LC 9 for it's Flatt shape. It is easy to hide and packs more wallup than a 380. But a good +P load is a pretty potent stopper. About the same as a 9mm I think. ...tj

Having had several 9mm revolvers there is one small sticking point...and that is case sticking/cylinder binding with +P loads.
To get the most out of .35/9mm caliber guns for defense one needs a lot of velocity. With standard pressure 9mm loads in a snubby one is going to be in the 900-1100 fps range depending on bullet weight...which means one is going to have limited expansion.
I've owned both the S&W 942 and Ruger LCR and both bound up the cylinder when using +P loads.
The case stick and cylinder binding is probably because the 9mm is a tapered case and when the pressure goes up the case backs out of the chamber binding the cylinder...

Bob This particular mold solves expansion and effectiveness problems in the 9mm and 38 Super.www.mp-molds.com/product/mp-359-125-hp-pb-2-cavity/It is quite effective when cast properly.

...I happen to have that mold.... Last night I set up to put some of those bullets into .38 Super cases with AAC-7 powder for a Reeder Custom Single-Six...
When I hunted with Dick in 2021 I think that was the bullet we used out of his .38 Super revolver...made a mess of little animals...
Problem being is that most people won't want to use a handload for defensive carry...

Winter carry, GP100 4" 357 Underwood 125 Gold Dots, the Taurus Tracker 4" 260 HC at 950 in the rotation. An auto in the summer.

The question was "the best defensive revolver round against people'. Not much need to talk about 50 yd. shots unless you carry a good lawyer in your back pocket. Instead, better to think about ear splitting indoor noise from a .357. Make mine a .45 ACP / AR. A 625 or even a Ruger birdshead .45ACP SA can serve nicely, as it has for over a century.

Good point, Ken. He's asking for REVOLVER, not semi auto. Cliber wise I've always been partial to the ol' .38 special with 148gr semi wadcutter. I also carry concealed ALWAYS and find one of S&W's J frame, airweights works for me (and has for 50 + years.

I'd go back to my 1st post on page 3... a medium load in a 45 Colt case with those huge meplat 250 grain Matt's wadcutters old picture of the gun before engraving, & for self defense, I use new nickel Starline 45 Colt cases... these same loads for range use...

Ken, the 50yd thing I believe I put in my reply simply due to the mall food court shooting. Plus out here in S. Texas dealing with illegals and their handlers or drug transporters 50 yards could even be not far enough. Granted those are worse case scenarios.

I will humbly offer a dissenting opinion, regarding longer range defense. My wife’s family’s somewhat rural property is located where one’s opponent might well be armed with an AK-style rifle, as evidenced by the empties left behind, by poachers and trespassers. I am not meaning Deliverance-level remote, but one county away from one of the most-populous counties in the USA. I have not met any of the crazier ones, but my wife, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law certainly have. A house was torched, in the late Nineties, and, a large truck got stuck in the mud, during an attempt to steal a portable building, about five years ago, after Hurricane Harvey. There are places where it is a best practice for one to arrive with a rifle, loaded with .223/5.56, if not .308 Winchester. Even if we leave bottleneck-cartridge rifles out of the discussion, I could find myself on the opposite side of a creek, from a family member in need of assistance. Do I want to have to scramble down the near bank, wade the creek, and climb the opposite bank, in order to get within effective range? .45 ACP is, indeed, a wonderful defensive cartridge in nearby Houston, Texas. .357 Magnum is a bit more versatile, in wider-open spaces.

Like me, you seem to be thinking more rural. Cannot make everyone happy, only so many compromises until only bad choices left.
