My carry revolver depends on my dress for the day. I really like the 38/357 J frame S&W for light dress concealment on hot days. On days that include an 8 hour RSO shift with a revolver I open carry an eight shot 357 Redhawk in a Gunfightersinc chest holster.

I dont have any criticism because I used to carry a snub nosed Ruger SP101 with Remington 357 Magnum 125 grain hollow points as my EDC; till after the following.
My Father owns a little piece of land on the Victoria Barge Canal. We get three alligator tags a year during September. Last weekend of the season on Saturday a 9 foot 3 inch gator was on our line and was dispatched with a 357 magnum Marlin rifle with 158 grain soft point bullets. No drama except a lot of skinning to process it out.
Sunday morning I was tired and my hands hurt from the day before. Dad wanted my son and I to take the boat 8 miles to the nearest ramp and he would meet us with the trailer to get the boat out of the water for cleaning. As I back the boat out of the slip, I look at our last line and it is tighter than a guitar string. Back to the slip. It was only me and my 10 year old son there when I started pulling in the line. I thought I had been snagged to the bottom on a Chevy truck bumper. No thrashing, no swimming, just a really heavy straight pull in. As the line came straight to the bank the line was between my feet. I lifted on the line and the back of the neck of the biggest alligator we have ever seen came out of the water with the nose of the gator tucked under my feet in the undercut of the bank. (Now here is where the REALLY dumb stuff happens.)
When I saw that back of the neck I had an adrenaline dump that was big enough to come in on a 18 wheel float. I slapped the 357 into action and put one round behind the skull into the neck. Gator puffed up and went limp but was still too heavy for me to get out of the water alone. Dad brought the tractor and forks with a long yellow lift strap. The gator was too big to get the strap around him from the bank. I had to get in the water. It is about 2 feet deep. I climbed on, over and around this gator getting the strap around his amazing girth. When we lift it out of the water we sat it down for the trophy pictures. As I am taking the strap off, he opens his mouth! THAT blankety blank is still alive and I was in the water WITH it!! Glad my pants were already wet because as I shot him again, one boot was filling with warm water faster than the other boot.
As the shock really sets in, my son comes back with the rest of the family and says "Daddy, looking at him I dont think it is a bad idea to shoot him again." I say "Son, I like the way you think." and shot him again. After the third bullet there were no more spontaneous movements from the gator. Upon skinning him out and taking the head for taxidermy, I found only ONE of the three bullets made the two inch wound channel to cut the spinal cord. These bullets didn't have to go through bone, just hide, muscle and a spinal cord; about two inches. All three expanded well but none broke any bones. I suspect the third made it deep enough to kill that gator. After that, I switched to a 45 Colt for EDC. No more 125 HP's for me in the 357. I could have just changed my loads and been happy but that feeling of terror knowing I was in the water with a 70 year old, 11 foot 8 inch killing machine that wasn't dead just soured me. But it is a personal decision and my experience only. Your mileage may vary.

If you're carrying a J frame or SP101, I think the 32 H&R or 327 is probably the better option vs the 38 caliber options since you jump from 5 shooter to a 6 shooter
The Colt Agent is a welcome step up from the J frame with 6 shots of 38
If carrying K frame, 6 shot 357
If L frame, 7 shot 357
N frame/Redhawk then 8 shot 357
When size isn't a concern, the 627 or 327 N frame 8 shot has the advantages of good sights, a superior trigger, and capacity.
Seems that most rounds are pretty equivalent fight stoppers, so you're better off giving yourself whatever capacity advantage is available and finding the best performing bullet for your chosen platform.

If I'm close to home it's usually a 2" model 36 with full wadcutters & a speed strip. If I venture a little farther away then the 696 catches a ride carrying 246 gr HP's & a speed strip. Also I carry a 45 Mountain Gun loaded with a 205 gr cast HP or an 8 shot 627 38 Super with 128 gr cast HP's & 2 spare moon clips. All of them have their place & get used & practiced with. Some of it depends on location & some depends on weather, the 2" J frame isn't as practical in the winter as one of the bigger guns & loads. Now I see why you go by"Airborne", Yikes!

Reload? Best to not plan to fail. Refine your shooting skill set. People look cross eyed at my bobbed hammer revolvers. For your carry gun learn to shoot DAO. A 50 yard silhouette fired DAO with an iron sighted 6 shot revolver at the end of the hall, shot by Jim Collins in competition, tells the tale. Bob those hammers and learn to shoot your gun.

Now I see why you go by"Airborne", Yikes! Dick Yep, carrying out dangerous missions without enough education to know to have fear. Without fear, there is no courage, only compliance. That probably ought to be my signature line. LOL. LOL. TRUST ME, it was only upon reflection I realized what COULD have happened.

OP asks for a revolver round, 2 legged vermin the threat. The 2 revolvers here that can fill the asked for niche get 44spec rounds dropped into them.

"LEOs don't like it said out loud. But, if these really nice guns get used, you're never seeing them again."
I've been sleeping good riiiiight up until reading that. Kinda figured it was true.

I agree with those that suggest keeping what you have. My two primary carry guns are an old Colt Agent with a hammer shroud and a 2.5" Smith 19. The Agent lives in my pants pocket 24/7 and the Smith is on my belt any day it's cool enough for a flannel shirt or more.
