Do any of you Contender shooters use a 30-30 barrel . How do you like it , and how is the recoil . I would guess its a slower push type recoil . I have a chance for a good buy on one but have never fired one with that barrel . Thanks for the info .

I have a 14" and a 10" in 30-30. I don't think recoil to too bad, but, I have been shooting heavy .41 and .44 magnums for years. I would think that there are more efficient .30 cartridges in those barrel lengths, but, I like shooting mine. Quite accurate, even with factory ammo.

Current outdoor writers seem to like the 30-30 in the TC Contender... The same writers, seemingly oblivious to Steve Herrett and Bob Melik's intent to make an efficient 30 Cal cartridge for a 10 inch barrel, can be pretty negative about the 30 Herrett... Haven't owned a 30-30 TC barrel yet but I am sure I will one day.. The 30-30 case is a fine platform for some wonderful wildcats. My 30-30 based cartridge barrel set includes 357 and 30 Herrett, 219 DW, 25 and 6mm BBI, and a 300 VJR. The 375 Winchester is out there for those who want brass designed for a little more pressure.. Guys like Gary Reeder and Mike Bellm can rechamber a 30-30 to something with a little more zip...

Axe,
Not a Contender owner but I never understood the rationale of the 30 and 35 Herrett's. Can you explain?

I think it was a simple as a rimmed case for the Contender and enough case capacity for a 10 inch barrel.... I also think there was a obviously a little pride and politics involved too... How often do you see a Wildcat made a standard production cartridge after so few years in the field? I have loved the whole idea from the beginning... Haven't ever shot them much but 30 and 357 Herrett barrels and dies have been standards in my TC set for more than 30 years...

The 10" are a great handling deer rig that can be carried all day. I wish I still had mine because I alway remember it when I shoot my new favorite 7mm08 10" Encore. The contender is a more compact and appropriate platform and with a good 2 or 4x scope they are capable of superb accuracy. The wood grips and poor design (for me at least) are the real issue as far as recoil goes but a good shooting glove can help that a lot.
Gary Reeder can do a 30GNR and get you some more zip with the added ability to still use factory 30/30 as you fireform the load, at least if my memory serves me right. You can also do some real neat stuff with those Sierra 125grJHPs if you like a good whistle pig challenge.

I've had my 14" barrel for 32 years (good grief!!!) and it's not for sale. I also had a 10" for several years, but sold it. Both were used in the early days of IHMSA shooting. The 14" is used today for occasional hunting and target work. Mine is excellent with 125 Sierras and 748.

Thanks for all the input .I think I will pick it up if I can get my price.I had a Contender in .357mag in 1977 or 78 . Guess I should have kept it. I remember all the great write ups about Herrets cartridges back then . I still lived in Idaho. I believe he was from Twin Falls Idaho.

If you like these type things keep your nose to the ground at the forums, auction sites, and at the guns shops... Good deals can be stumbled upon. For the Herretts when you see barrels ask about the die set and look hard for the trim die and extended shell holder that goes with it.. Become TC smart enough to recognize a one piece bolt and use the presence of such a thing as a bargaining chip...

Axe, Not a Contender owner but I never understood the rationale of the 30 and 35 Herrett's. Can you explain? Efficiency. The .30 Herrett matches the .30-30 and the .357 Herrett matches the .35 Remington in the short 10" barrel. The same reason Remington developed the .221 Fireball for the XP pistol instead of staying with a .222 or .223 and why there's virtually no difference between a .38 Special +P and .357 Magnum in a 2" barrel snubby revolver. Just as a side note: The 7.62x39mm and the .30 Herrett are nearly ballistic twins.
