Would a .44 magnum be enough gun for bear in the lower 48? I know the grizzlies in the lower 48 are considerably smaller than the one found in Alaska. I get to WY, MT and CO for camping and fly fishing. Not that I expect to ever have to use it, but in this case I think it pays to be prepared. Ruger 4 5/8" Super Blackhawk is the gun to be carried.

Placement of a proper projectile would make a 44mag, more than adequate. Especially since a defensive bear encounter is typically measured in feet rather than yards. Recent Studies show more bears are killed 40sw than most other calibers, but that’s because it’s what LE carries and when they are responding to marauding bear calls. Bears didn’t get tougher in the last 30-40 years, just more people enjoying the wilderness got stupider.

I agree. Bullet choice and the shooter's ability to put that bullet in the right place is what's important.
Sounds easy, but definitely wouldn't be the same when you're the prey instead of the hunter...

Kid44, welcome to the forum. Safe to say, the 44mag cartridge is adequate for hunting or stopping lower 48 bears of either kind. Good bullet choice helps, good shooting...ah..the rub. Luck.
