I've been looking at one for a while and finally picked up a Colt King Cobra 3" .357. It'll be a general purpose hiking companion, and with it's size can be discreetly carried in a Hill People Gear belt pack when holster carry is less convenient. Looking forward to getting some time with it at the range and was wondering what y'all like for a general purpose load. I'm new to loading for .357 so looking for a few suggestions. Would also like some suggestions on suitable leather for it too.

Nice gun...I basically have the same gun in S&W...a 60-10 3" with adjustable sights. My favorite for backpacking, hiking and fishing...
As to loads...factory I like the Buffalo Bore .38 Special +P Outdoorsman in the hard cast and HP-GC loads. Duplicates the original .38-44 loads.
Handloads...357156 Lyman/Thompson mold from MP Molds has solids and HPs...6.0 grains of Unique is very close to the BB loads. Underwood also has a 158 PC +P load that is running even faster.
If Colt was smart they would chamber that gun in .327 Federal...but what do I know....

I have owned a KC3" like yours for a couple of years and I shoot it often. RJM gave some good loads. I use a 358156 158LSWC from Rimrock Bullets in Polson, Mt good bullets and great service. I shoot these in a 357 case and 12 grains of 2400 for a satisfying and accurate load giving a little over a 1,000fps in the 3". That load I just mentioned is put up in 357 cases and a standard primer. For leather I have two rigs, both made for the 3" SP101 that work rather well. One is the Simply Rugged pictured by Sixgun 100 and the other is a DeSantis pancake style rig also for the SP. I use a HKS DS (DETECTIVE SPECIAL) speedloader for a second six. Enjoy your new sixgun! DeSantis rig in pic!

I bought the 4.2" King Cobra Target and like it very much. Do not like the fiber optic front sight.
Hopefully, they'll be a replacement soon.
Congrats on yours. Look forward to a range report...

I've been a fan boy for quite a while of the Colt snake guns. This new Cobra sure looks solid. I have an old Cobra that is super light that is a hoot to shoot. It weighs 15 oz and is an awesome carry in the backcountry.
But that fiber optic front sight on this new one is a deal breaker for me. My old eyes just can't make that FO thing work. I realize anyone can change it, but buying a new gun that needs work and doesn't fit my needs seems more than questionable.

Thanks for the help fellas. sixgun100, what speedloader are you using? ezekiel38, are those VZ grips? I think I'm going to try a set of the tactical diamonds, as finger groove grips never really fit me. Encore64, would the gold bead that comes on the 3" work on the target model? I'm not a fan of FO sights either, but the gold/brass bead works well for me.

That is a very sound choice for a hiking firearm and a nice looking one to boot.
