I have a M36 Chiefs Special I am wondering what the approximate value of.
It's serial number is J961xxx, putting it's date of manufacture in '69 or '70. It's factory nickel finish is NRA excellent at 98%. The original grips do have a scratch, but the checkering remains sharp. It appears to have been a safe queen it's whole life. Lock-up is as tight as any Smith I have ever handled, with no visible wear anywhere.
Any estimate for a real value on it would be appreciated.

I checked Gunbroker.com - Completed Auctions (you can as well) I see nice examples around $700 to $800.
I see excellent examples above $1,000 +. Quite a large range of prices.

More information will get you a better answer. What is the barrel length, 2" or 3"? If 3", tapered or heavy barrel? Round butt or square butt? Those all play into the value. Also, an original box also adds to the value. Those are important to a collector.

2", round butt, color case on the trigger and hammer still in good condition and bright for it's age. Nickel finish is high polish original, no peeling flaking or blemishes. The man who owned it bought it as a backup gun, but never carried it. The original owners manual is here, but no box.
