Well I shot a couple of whitetails this morning. The first was with the 06'. Two deer stepped out at around 75yds, they both looked like does. I neck shot the larger one, 105#, it dropped in its tracks. The smaller one ran off, so I thought I'd just sit tight and see if it came back. About 15 minutes later another one stepped out at 38 yds, so I pulled the 480 Ruger bisley and popped it just behind the shoulders. The NOE 355gn hp, loaded with 20gn 2400- 1350fps, blew chunks of lung 15 feet past it all over the ground. Nice bright pink frothy blood trail to follow. Went about 100yds. It turned out to be a button buck and had little nubs still under the skin. My zone allows 5 deer, but only 2 can be bucks. I'm down at camp, so can't post pictures. castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?449838-480-Bisley-vs-whitetail

Meat is meat,, and no apologies for the doe or the button! Does your state allow you to tag the button as an "anterless" kill or does it have to be tagged as a buck?

Now that's a good day ! Good shooting too. Tenderloin and eggs for breakfast ? Wish that bullet was commercially available, PC'd. Sigh.

The nubs had not broken the skin, but testicles make it get tagged as a buck. So 3 more tags to go and only 1 more can be a buck.

Interesting. In NC,, a button is considered "anterless" so it doesn't prevent you from tagging antlered bucks. (You can't see the testicles,, so you are supposed to consider them a doe.)

Here in Oklahoma it’s considered a doe if it’s 3” and under.
Nice job no matter what.

In Arkansas, both antlers shorter than 2" = Button buck. Some zones state that Button bucks are counted as antlerless. I'm hunting in zone 12, the regs say Button bucks are counted towards the two buck limit.
So you are supposed to look really close at the head.

Those kinds of laws really gripe me because it can make a legal hunter into a poacher real easy. What if one horn is off by 1/4", now you've broken the law over something pretty dumb in my opinion. A couple of years ago here in Idaho I had a spike bull within six gun range & if the horns are under 6" it's legal during the cow season. Both horns were very short, one was shorter than the other but I didn't dare shoot because of the same silly rule you're talking about. A 6" spike is the same age as a bull that has 10" or 14" of horns, he wasn't born in a different year, but it can make a criminal out of the hunter if he decides to shoot....dumb law! Who carries a measuring tape. Rant over!

I hear you Dick about the "length" requirement. No way you can "measure" a horn w/o laying hands on. In some places,, they make you count the points to determine if legal. At least here,, they just specify "Antlered or Anterless!" And a button buck, that hasn't got the skin broken through showing actual antler,, is considered anterless.
