Just acquired a 460 Smith & Wesson 12 in barrel. Using my .45 Colt dies I sized some brass and put together some loads . None of my manuals had any data but I had several editions of the Hodgdon basic reloading manual including the 2022 book. The 2022 manuals gives a top load for a 260 Nosler bullet as 46 grs - 10% = 41.4 gr of 296- H110. I loaded 42 of 296, 2 grs. under book max with a 10 gr lighter 250 gr Nosler and that was enough, recoil was stout and cases very hard to eject. like tap the ejector rod with a stick hard. Scrolling through their web page tonight and they list 39-41.5 grs for a 250 grn. so which do you use, book shows 46 grs as max, web page shows 41.5 as max. I have been doing reloading for a long time since 1965 or so and have always tried to stay close to the middle of the data, but that's a big spread in their own data. I know they are guidelines but that's a big spread between book max and web max., 4.5 grns.

DIFFERENT BRASS, DIFFERENT PRIMERS???
HERE IS MY TAKE ON S&W 460's, AND I HAVE 2, AND HAVE HAD 1 SINCE THEY FIRST CAME OUT: 1) IT IS A SPECIAL PURPOSE HUNTING REVOLVER; 2) ITS NUTS TO TRY AND SHOOT IT A LOT; 3) ITS NICHE IS WITH LIGHTWEIGHT, e.g. 200gr, HIGH VELOCITY LOADS; 4) YOU WILL LIKELY BE DISAPPOINTED WITH VELOCITY WITH HEAVIER BULLETS; 5) YOU MAY BE ABLE TO PUSH CONVENTIONAL BULLETS (NON-MONO) FASTER THAN THEY ARE BUILT FOR REVOLVER USE; 6) NOT A LOT OF HANDLOADING INFO OUT THERE TELLS ME SOMETHING NEGATIVE ABOUT RELOADING THE 460; and 7) WITH HEAVIER BULLETS, SAY 250gr AND UP, YOU CAN COME CLOSE ENUFF IN A GOOD 454.
THE LONG CYLINDERED BFR IN 460 MAY BE A DIFFERENT ANIMAL. A FRIEND WAS LOADING 325 SWIFTS AND GETTING 2,000fps AND ITS PERFORMANCE ON AFRICAN GAME WAS SPECTACULAR.

I would try a slower burning powder and see if that is the key. 1680 comes to mind. With a 12"barrel you would have plenty of barrel to burn the load and might even pick up some velocity with less recoil.

I don't have a 460, but do have a 450bushmaster. 1680 and CFE-BLK work great. I've been shooting the Speer .458" 350 sized to .452" @ 1800fps.

I've had good luck with the 454629(#2) and RCBS 45-300-SWC(#4) with a good charge of CFE Black from a 8 3/8 Inch barrel.
