My Model 66-4 3", came with a nice set of (I think eagle) brand grips. Nice wood smooth with finger groves. I believe , it originally had smooth combat grips. (read a factory letter from another such gun) 1st Question, was SnW still putting the S#on grips in 1996 ? 2nd Question, does anyone know where I might find a set ?...tj

With few exceptions, the only stocks that carried numbers (on the right panel only) were the Service Stock and the Magna Stock because they were sande to fit an individual frame. By their nature, the Target and other stocks were more forgiving in fit and not numbered.
I will try to track down the date of the order that stopped numbering the grips.

According to the Standard Catalog of S&W 4th Edition they started putting Hogue grips on with the 66-4.

I always thought the sn marked grips was a while back. My post war 357 came with matching serial numbered grips. Don't remember my S&Ws from the 60s and 70s having any numbers on them.

S&W was serializing "service stocks" well up into the 70s as all Model 58s were...

Bet that complicates life for the "collectors." Bagged the serial numbered grips from my post war magnum for in case a collector wants them some day.

It depends on how original you want your revolver to be. If it is a authentic 100%, lightly fired specimen, most would expect the original stocks on it. A WWII, GI bring back S&W Model 1917 that had seen much time in the trenches of WWI, spent peace time on the Mexican border and sent to Europe after an Arsenal overhaul, well, your expectations might be a little lower. For the grips: gun forums, ebay and gun shows.
