Sorry I can't show you any bull elk but maybe tomorrow. Two of my grandson's still have tags & they've been into elk a couple of times but it's got dark on them both times. Tonight me & my oldest son decided to do a little scouting to try & help them out so we checked out the same place where I shot my buck last Wednesday.
This spot always has game because of the somewhat hidden Alfalfa field, you have to know it's there or you miss it, plus it's private. All of the animals bed quite a ways away from this field but just before sundown things get kind of magical. We ended up seeing right at 20 deer but a long ways off & also 5 bull elk, again a long way off. We ranged the elk at just over 2300 yds. Shane has an amazing range finder.
Four of the bulls ended up fighting, I sure wish some of you that have never seen this could have been there, its quite a scene to watch, they really get after it, then stop & feed or walk away a little bit & then as if someone rings the bell they go at it again. This happend 4-5 times. Then one bull just starting walking right down off the mountain towards the hay field, dinner time! The highest mountain you see out my front window & just to the right of the pine trees is where they are standing. I shot my buck in the grain field just above the lava reef.
Tomorrow morning, in the dark one of my grandson's will be standing about 200 yds south of that same spot. He will climb the south end in the dark, check the wind & make a very quiet walk towards those bulls feeding below him in the field. He will have to be there in the dark or they will climb that mountain & be gone before he gets there. You can't find morning elk in the daylight on public land after the first week very often.
