I haven’t hunted with this revolver as much as I’d like, due to the sight regulation after installing a Bowen Rough Country rear sight. I’d killed a few deer with it, but with the rear sight bottomed out, it was shooting 6 inches high at 50 yards. Being I zero all my revolvers is 2 inches high at 50 yards, I didn’t want to have to remember where to hold on this revolver and possibly missing or making a bad hit on a deer. Well I finally got around to building up the front sight with some JB Weld (Redneck fix) for the time being so I can hunt with it this year. I did it in a #5 style sight. The first three shots at 50 yards were on target…. Did a little tweaking on the rear sight and fire two more - and then two more. Walking it up where I wanted it. Once I got it 2 inches high at 50 yards, I did a 75 yard sight check , and bingo… I’m ready for hunting season. It’s shooting a 240 gr powder coated Keith hollow point, by Dick Thompson, fueled with 19 grs of 2400.

Good job getting the OM back in action. It's another beautiful gun you have. Jim Stroh put a taller front sight on my OM SBH to get it zeroed, but I feel like I lose a lot of effectiveness with iron sights.

Why not get a different rear sight insert since it is a rough country sight? My 500 Linebaugh would not regulate to my liking with 350s, so i just ordered a taller rear sight insert and it fixed the problem.

I really didn’t want any shallower rear notch and it wouldn’t give me reason for a Fermin front sight😜 The factory rear blade was very shallow, sight bottomed out, and still shot 4” high at 50 yards - and that was after removing a few thousandths from the bottom. I think Ruger had the sights regulated for the high velocity lighter weight bullets of the day.

So many of the early Rugers had a problem with the front sight being to short. The first Old Model Flat Top .44 Magnum I bought was 6" high at 50 yards with a stiff loaded 240 grain Keith bullet. I ran it down to Hamilton Bowen and he installed a pin in front blade of the proper height, a locking base pin, a steel ejector rod housing and a action job. It's still one of my favorites !
