If I was going for a 45ACP cartridge, I would load a quality bullet, with a strong load ( maybe too much for an auto loader) and use it in a revolver, so it’s never going to overpower the gun. That will be more than just adequate for a one shot kill and drop a hog instantly. Just my .02cents worth……..

I was at the most recent HHC (enjoyed meeting and conversing with everyone), and I believe I can take credit for suggesting the 45 challenge.
I was party and first hand witness to the fiasco that started with the simple premise of killing the biggest sow on the place with a single bullet from a 45 auto pistol to the head. It didn't go smoothly. Multiple shots were fired. A lot of ground was covered. The pre and post hunt conversations centered around the lackluster performance of the 45 ACP and the decision to use it. Can't be done?... Shouldn't be done?..and thus the 45 challenge was born.
I asked who will take it upon themselves to get close and shoot precisely to kill clean with a seemingly underperforming cartridge and platform?

Like anything else, placement and bullet choice are top decisions. I’ve taken quite a few hogs with underachieving poor performing 45acp, from a Combat Commander and a 230gr Federal HydraShok. I would not feel hampered hunting with mine out to 50 yards. Since I wasn’t there during the fiasco at HHC, I’d speculate that placement was the main issue, since a simple 22lr can and has cleanly taken feral hogs with a properly placed shot. The angle of entry is vitally important, and having a good knowledge of animal anatomy helps tremendously instead of guessing and going with the old adage of shootem between the eyes.
