I traded into this over the weekend and added a Leupold 2-7x compact scope I had put away. What a handy little rifle! With a 20” barrel it’s still just over 36” long.

The fact that single shots tend to be 2-3 inches shorter than their bolt action cousins is one of the draws to me. My Browning B-78 in 7 mag much handier that the Remington 700 7 mag I gave my son.

I traded into this over the weekend and added a Leupold 2-7x compact scope I had put away. What a handy little rifle! With a 20” barrel it’s still just over 36” long. ***** Scope looks to be the standard Leupold 2-7x Vari-X II, a great, stabile, adversity-resistant hunting scope back in the day, which I would consider a find today. Bill Ruger’s fondness for Mannlicher mountain carbines inspired his International models in both M-77 bold action and No. 1 falling block. By that time Bill wasn’t hunting any more, but his son found the M-77 International .30-06, with tang safety----and 18” bbl, as I recall----a favorite in the woods. The forend/muzzle cap makes it imperative to sight in for one load. and don’t change ammo mid-hunt. To alter powder charge 1/2 to 1-grain, or swap bullets of same weight, can throw your group off. This aspect of the muzzle band is offset somewhat by epoxy bedding the forend to the muzzle. Done with release compound on barrel, the rifle may be stripped, with a good chance of return-to-ZERO on reassembly. The real bonus: bedding forend & steel cap tightens groups. David Bradshaw

I had to use extended rings on mine to get the 2x7 Leupold closer to my eye. Otherwise I had to creep up on the scope to get good eye relief.

Very nice, I envy those Who have those in 7X57. The value on #1s has gone through the roof, I had a #1A in 7X57, that was way more acurate than it had a right to be. I put the same 2X7 on it. The 1st 3 shots I put through it were off a bench, And it was about a .5 inch group, that Bracketed, the hole in the top of the target that the peg went through at the store. I counted the inches to the bullseye, Divide by 4, -6 next three were right where I wanted, 1.5 inches High at 100 yards. Never moved it again. Load was 140 grain Ballistic tip over H-414. I Eventually pushed it up to 3000 FPS, with that strong action. But I backed it down to 2800. ...tj

I also have a soft spot for #1 rifles. I have 2 and regret trading away a 3rd in 243 and a 4th in 35whelen that misfired constantly. Sent it back to Ruger and they determined that it could not be fixed and offered me a replacement or a check. I think I took the check.
The 2 I have are 1S models, 45-70 and 7x57. The 7 has a case hardened receiver and rings.

Great combo. I’ve found that when working up loads for my 7x57 RSI that gripping the forend and l laying hand on the bag like you would in a hunting situation was more consistent than just wood on bag.
