My plan this year is to hunt with my 6 inch revolver. I am planning on using 158 gr soft cast bullets with gas checks. Shoots good at 25 yards. I want to sight it for at least 50 yards. What muzzle velocity do you think I should be trying for. Appreciate any answers.

Personally, I like to push my 357 revolvers like magnums when it comes to medium game. The last couple years I have been shooting a 158 HP from and MP Mold. 70/30 ww to lead blend, plain base, powder coated. With AA#9 I am running in the 1375 range from my 4 inch GP100. I used this load twice in the last two years on average sized whitetail does. Both shots were under 25 yds more or less broadside, shoulder blade was hit both times. Nether went 25 yards after the hit. Internal damage on both was pretty darn good. I have used the 180 gr LBT, and the classic 358156/2400 loads at the same basic speeds, also with good results. (My notes say the 358156 was running 1420 from a 6 inch 586 and both deer I shot with it were hit on the shoulder and were just over 25 yds away) The least damage was probably from the 358156 cast of fairly hard alloy. BUT, the couple of does that fell to that load for me did not go more than a few yards after the shot and were not hard to find - so i took that as effective and went on from there. Limited sample for sure, but I have been comfortable with those loads on whitetail, and would be so out to 50 yds as long as I was confident in my placement. YMMV

I have the 358/156. I cast everything soft now days. I use the same bullet in my Rossi 92. I also like the lee 358/158 gas check bullets.

I don’t run lead. But I have used several quality jacketed HP and drive them 1300-1400 fps and they do wonderful on deer.
