. .44 frames are larger with every maker. the .357 frame gives a gunsmith a small platform to build whatever his imagination can put in it. S&W .357 N-FRAME AND .44 USE THE SAME SIZE FRAME. RUGER'S SUPER BLACKHAWK IS THE SAME SIZE AS THE .357 BLACKHAWK. HAS BEEN SINCE 1972. THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY .357 AND NV ARE SMALLER.

The 357 just never tripped my trigger.

JT, I meant that the .357 FRAMED are smaller guns than what the manufacturers are willing to make for a .44,...which is why most came out with a '.44 frame' etc. sure there are some examples of a .357 in N frames, etc but for the most part they're on a smaller frame. the blackhawk did go to a '44 frame for everything' which is why all the old model guns are so desirable for conversions and the anni models are such a big deal. those pre '72 blackhawks are pretty coveted by most too,...

I was without a 357 for years, concentrating on 44 special, magnum, and 45 Colt. Then I discovered about 1K rounds that I'd loaded years before and took a 357 Rossi M/92 in a trade. I really didn't want the Rossi, but the friend whom I thought did, didn't want it, either. So, I went looking for a pistol to go with the rifle, for at least 1K rounds. I bought a Blackhawk convertible -- just in case I stumble onto some 9mm I forgot I had -- and I've come to really like the cartridge again. The revolver now rotates with my 45 Colt and my Lipseys 44 Special as I work around the ranch. (The 45 Colt Blackhawk still gets more days than the others, though.) And, the carbine rides in the atv gun carrier I installed on the tractor.

The .357 is my favorite cartridge. Maybe because it was my first handgun, S&W 686. But the real reason is it will do everything I need a handgun for around my area. We only have whitetails no bears till you get to the mountainsand I would have to say it would take care of a bear in a pinch. My Mountain Gun is always with me. For protection I have seven round of pontent .357's and for deer/coyote it will work short range. Yea it is loud. So is everything else. 44/45/454's are even louder. Even the .45 ACP has a crack to it without protection. I always have plugs/muffs with me shooting anything. I rather put plugs in a waste a few seconds than be deaf when I'm in my 50's. I know a lot of older shooters like that.
Plus they pack so nicely in a mid sized framed gun.

So Woody, you don't want to be like the rest of us old geezers? At least we are never lonely, the phone is ALWAYS ringing in both my ears. I just can't remember where I put it so I could answer the DA*N thing and turn it off!

I hate it for all you old guys and your bad ears.... After a AF and ANG career of working on the flightline with most of those years on military marksmanship teams I think my hearing is holding up pretty good... Those F4s would howl pretty good. In the old days they would put them on the hook and run them up to full military out in the open... Lived a few miles from the base but I can still remember that sound on hot summer nights. By the time I retired they were required to put them on the muffler... P.S. Don't tell the wife I can hear... She thinks I am almost deaf!

Kings6 I do have some ringing in my left ear. Not real bad. It's from years of duck hunting with no protection when I was younger. That is what really made me go to always wearing protection now. The only exception is turkey hunting for the most part just is not practical. Tried electronics turkey hunting. Hard to tell where a bird is exactly etc.

Here's the worst - the Mrs. has quantitative data to show that I don't pay attention. Early on when she was training to be a speech-language pathologist, she had to collect volunteers for the audiology lab to test hearing. I told her that I never heard her due to her mumbling and my hearing loss due to shooting. She brought me into the lab and I received a perfect score...

The right ear is a constant low hum, the left ear now that is a volume up non stop phone call. Most of that was from a very stupid mistake with a Kimber 45 Ultra Compact about 3" from the ear and a ND during a Hunter Ed class. THAT is a whole other story about a really bad day.

i had a guy, ie jackass, light a 7mm mag off about a foot from and over top of my head while hunting. i was down in the dirt with the revolver over my knees ready to shoot. luckily it was slighty ahead of my ears, but it still gave me a three day pounder and made the stomach turn for the first day. i don't envy your experience king6.
