This is a question that has been in the back of my mind for some time now. Examples include the Ruger mid frame anniversary model. .357 The USFA Magnum series, .357. The original Ruger Blackhawk, .357. There are proably others I cannot recall right now but you get the point. I am not knocking the great .357 magnum but really, how often do you here amongst avid single action fans something like this, hey guys, I just sent off a beater 44 mag to Harton to be customized into a real cool .357. It just doesnt seem to be that popular of a cartridge in the world I live in. I have a nice customized OM .357 by Andy Horvath that I really like but all I ever shoot in it is 38 Specials.
I wonder why the gun companies don't just start out with some cool calibers in the first place so we don't have to keep getting .357 mags converted. ;D

They alll start with ..357's because they know we are diehard tinkerers and the 357 is the perfect starting point. ;D I guess it is the same reason I'm selling the Lipseys 44 Special I bought Friday. I took it home and the first thing I started doing was making a list of what I wanted to start doing to it. Ended up deciding to sell it and have Andy Horvath do a conversion on an OM 357 so I have one that is "mine" instead of one like 999 other Lipsey's 5 1/2 guns. THEY DID THE .357 BLACKHAWK FIRST BECAUSE IN 1955 THERE WAS NO .44 MAGNUM AND THE .357 WAS DEFINITELY THE CARTRIDGE OF CHOICE FOR OUTDOOR TYPES. TODAY THE .357 IS STILL THE BEST CHOICE FOR THE MAJORITY OF SHOOTERS. |

Agreed John (I hope I can call you John without making you mad as around here, Phoenix that is, people regard you as a sixgunnin' god), but I also wonder if it may have something to do with maybe being able to build the guns a little weaker as there is more wall around the cartridge?

I've recently returned to the .357 after years of ignoring it. I've always had one and it was my first centerfire and the first round I ever reloaded but it had somehow lost it's magic with me. While I'll never give up my .44's, I've found that Mr. Taffin is right (Duh) in that the .357 is the best choice for the majority of shooters.
Bottom line, the .357 just plain works for the vast majority of my needs.

It was the first handgun cartridge to bestowe the name magnum and it has crossed more generations than any of the other magnums. The 357 is the most useful of all the magnums for the range of gun sizes it fits into for all purposes. It really does still work for hunting all the game it use to be used for before the other magnums came along. The 357 puts a useful field gun into the hands of recoil sensitive people who might not elsewise carry. Sure it's not no 500 S&W Magnum but no other caliber is. Just because the press does not push it does not mean it's not good.

NO god HERE BUT I DOUBT THEY USE WEAKER STEEL FOR THE .357 THAN THEY DO OTHER SIXGUNS. THEY CAN GET BY WITH SMALLER CYLINDERS AS IN THE 340Sc AND 360Sc |

You guys look at your "set." In my set I didn't realize how thick the 357s were in my until I counted them.... S&W, Colt, Ruger, FA,.... They are everywhere!

The first gun I ever bought was a GP-100. Since then, I've never been without a .357 and currently own several. It is one of the THE best all-around cartridges. Skeeter chose it as his only cartridge if he had to beat it to the hills and take only one gun. I can't disagree with him under those circumstances, even if it isn't my first choice for some of what I do.

The 357 is one of my absolute favorite calibers. Wonderfully accurate an devastating on critters of the pest variety. I have lots of them!

Interesting. I have zero use for the 357 Mag and in the four I own I only shoot 38 Specials. Way too much thunder for what spouts out of the barrel for me. I go with the 32 Mag loaded stout or jump to the 40's, 41's, 44's and 45's otherwise. That said I do really enjoy the 357 Maxi...
