lar4570 - beautiful .405 you have there. I bought a similar high-grade 1895 when Winchester did the first run back in '03. It isn't a Roosevelt commemorative but is similar in appearance. I applaud you for shooting it. Mine is still NIB. It would've been shot had I not purchased a Ruger No. 1 in .405 when they came out shortly thereafter: The .405 Winchester is a neat old round that lacks nothing. A few months back, my dad converted a Mauser 98 to the cartridge and got it to feed flawlessly, rim and all. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Hi Lee, I'm a serious Mauser fan. I'd love to see some pics of the action, feed rails... How many does it hold 4-5?
On my 405, I was just looking for something to shoot and ran across this one for only $200 more than a shooter grade original, so...

I guess my Shiloh Sharps .40-70 Straight is pretty close since the brass is made from .405 Winchester slight stretched, of course it will only see black powder though

VERY nice guns guys... I had a Ruger stainless but sold it. Beside the 1895 Winchester also have a 1885 Sporter. A friend sold me a TC Encore barrel and had a local smith cut it down to 20" to match the 500 S&W barrel and make a handier tree stand gun. One "problem" with the 1895 I have is that is an early gun that isn't D&T for a side mounted receiver sight. Have been thinking about one of these instead... www.buffaloarms.com/21-type-long-sight-blued-ptclongb.html

IS THERE A SCOUT RAIL AVAILABLE FOR THE MODERN 1895's? A GOOD RED DOT MIGHT WORK WELL WITH THAT SET UP.

I'm on vacation this week, but will take photos of it when I get back. I haven't shot the rifle yet and can't remember how many he said the magazine holds. My guess is 4. The feed rails took some massaging, but he got it to cycle flawlessly. At last check he was finishing a high walnut stock for it (he used an old stock for test firing). After that, he'll blue the barreled action. Pictures coming.... -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Saw a picture of an 1895 that had the barrel shortened, barrel band style front sight and a QD scope on scout bases...very slick setup.. Bob

I had this old Winchester Model 1895 built in 1900. When it came to me, the 30 US barrel had seen better days. I took it to a gunsmith in Sandusky and asked him to pull the barrel so I could send it out for a rebore to 35 caliber. He agreed but before I left, he handed me a big piece of iron rod with a hole in it. ”…That is available, if you don’t have to have a 35…”. Turns out he handed me a 40 caliber, unchambered and about 2” in diameter. We agreed and sat down to hammer out details. Here is how it turned out. Kevin

A Winchester 1885 Sporter ( 24" octagon barrel, shotgun butt with a 1" recoil pad) just sold on GB for $1500...
That is the one I have and with that recoil pad makes it very pleasant to shoot. There are two more in that line of Tradition Hunters that have 22" and 28" barrels with STEEL crescent butts and tang sights...I can't imagine touching off a factory round...

I have read of guys cutting a long throat in the 405 to long seat 400gn solids to get 450-400 performance out of them. The new ones are chambered in 270 win, so the pressure of the 405 could be bumped up also.
