Ran across this little gem last week and had to find out what it was all about. My favorite 1911 smith finally stopped bidding and let me have her. This one started as a M36-1 .38 Special with a 3" barrel. A talented smith who remains unidentified added a J-frame rear sight, a S&W M30-1 .32 barrel that has been re-bored to .38 and had the front sight either replaced or extended and reshaped. He also crafted a nice version of a mini target hammer and trigger. The re-blue is fabulous. Some rather plain (for Keith) Keith Brown grips finish it off. It is impossible to explain how much these grips add to the shoot-ability of these little revolvers. At least for me they do. Only whining other than the gun needing a good cleaning is that the rear sight could have been cut back flush with the receiver better. This is a super nice little trail gun that Smith should have made. It feels much handier than my M60-18 with the 5" barrel and I like the fact that it's a square butt gun also. Last photo is the M36 along side my M30-1 in .32 S&W long.

That is a cool little gun, and one I’d rather have than a Single Six in 38Spec. The front sight looks to me to be out of proportion to the slender barrel, just too wide at the top. Still a great find.

I like that hammer and trigger work a lot. Overall looks very nicely done. I like little J frames that are made into target-ish guns. My model 63 is kinda like that with a 4 inch barrel and adjustable rear sight.
Are you saying the front tang of the sight needs contouring or the rear sight blade should be flush with the rear of the main frame?
I think the front sight would benefit from a sight base that's half the height of the front sight with a pin in blade, but the current sight could be trimmed to a Baughman with the same profile as a base+sight. That with serrations would make for a very nice sight picture, if less holster friendly.

Yes, the tang is long…. I’m not crazy about the front sight either but I don’t think it warrants sending it off to have it changed. For what it’s worth that blade is serrated… This is what the gun that Smith produced on the same platform looks like. It’s worse! www.gunbroker.com/item/934237210

I think the front sight looks okay on yours it just seems a bit needlessly wide across the top, but the gun as a whole is awesome.

Every time I see one of those Single-six to .38 Special conversions I get to thinking which of my Single-sixes I should send off. Then, I think of my 3 in. Model 36 and realize I already have the perfect packing .38.
Seeing yours with the upgrades gets me to thinking maybe mine aint quite perfect yet. I love it.

A Model 15 is a little bigger but infinitely more shootable than the J frame guns and easy to come by for a reasonable price.

Oh, a K or L frame is definitely better when you plan to do some serious shooting. But, when you just want to have something reasonably potent and barely noticeable on your hip, the 36 is just right.
