I've had this New Service in 455 Eley for a while and finally decided to start some load development for it. The gun was built in 1916 and unlike most 455 Colts bears no foreign proof marks. The Colt letter gives a good indication why as this one was shipped to Von Lengerke and Detmold in New York and most likely never left the states. One of the challenges with loading for the 455 is the lack of relevant reloading data for it. As I searched the web and all reloading manuals I had access to I was able to find some data for Unique, HP-38, Bullseye and some references to Titegroup but no specific data for it. As I'm unable to find any Bullseye I tried Unique, HP-38 and Titegroup. I started out trying several different cast bullets, the RCBS 230CM, 454190, 454524, the Webley 260gr and the 270 SAA. After working through the different powder and bullet combinations I have gotten the best results from Unique and the 270gr SAA bullet. The POA was the bottom of the Bullseye and while a little left I can live with it.

What a wonderful old gun you have there. I'd venture to say the front sight was never filed down to regulate the POI.
Owning that is a blessing!!!

Can I inquire as to where you obtained a .456 bullet? My neighbor has an old NS for 45ACP but a 45 Colt barrel and we've been attempting to get it to group with 451-2 with not much luck.
Beautiful old Colt, you have there.

Beautiful old Colt, you have there. Thanks, I cast them from an MP mold with 16-1 alloy, powder coat them which takes them to around .457+ and then run them through a .456 sizing die from NOE Molds. I'm fortunate to have 7 Colt New Service revolvers in 45 Colt, 45 ACP and 455 and all their throats measure .456 except one, a 1930s Commercial New Service in 45 Colt which measures .455.

470evan,
I appreciate a man who knows his throat sizes on all his cylinders for all his 45's. Have you slugged the bore for groove diameter as well? I'm a big fan of knowing the numbers, even when the group sizes are tiny.

Ken Waters did a full article on .455 in Pet Loads if you can locate a copy. Also Bear Creek Supply lists a 265gr .455 RNHB that may work for you.
