Never been there , and not going, But I was watching you tube videos, (so now I am an expert) The guide and the hunter were stalking a big bear, in the alder thickets. I can see the Dilemma, they face, in order to move fast they sling there rifle's, , In a thicket ? and not sure where the Bear is ? or another bear ? Both the guide and the Hunter have big bolt gun's. I see not revolver or any close range gun on either guy. Bears are fast, and they will just run right through the alders to GET YOU , If I were the guide, I am packing something other than a big old Bolt rifle, and using a boonie packer. Round in the chamber hammer at half cock thumb on the hammer. But Like I said I ain't going. I think in that situation, A big horn Armory lever gun in .454, or maybe 500 SnW would be my 1st choice ! What would you choose ? ...tj

Levergun 45-70 or 50AK, or Benelli auto with Brenneke slugs, followed by Double rifle 9.3x74, and lastly 500L. That’s just what I have available right now.

I’ve got a good friend who’s an outfitter for the past 25yrs in AK and does high $$ brownie hunts. Carries a double 3 1’2” 10 ga. Or a .338 win.
Not a pistol in sight…

The prey of choice is one thing. It requires , deserves a respectful choice of weapon. A guide, professional hunter has different priorities. Helping to stop or finish something already hit and going away, or something hit or not, closing FAST. Packing around camp, at night, while dressing game, another consideration too.

There's a reason many guides carry 375's with 20" barrels. At least the long career type does.

bucket list hunt right there...
depending on known conditions, & if I'm handgun hunting or rifle hunting...one of my BFR's ( 45-70 or 500 JRH ) or my my 480 Alaskan on my belt, if rifle hunting, either my 45-70 guide gun, or my 338 Win Mag Browning stainless stalker, or my 500 JRH Encore in my arms

I saw my first brown bear (outside of a zoo) on Kodiak on a military training trip. It looked a like a furry minivan that could eat us all. Everyone became much more aware of their surroundings after that.
I love it up there, I tried to get an exchange posting (I was Army) at the NSW Cold Weather Detachment but I couldn't swing it.

I tried for NSW too. Instead we invaded Panama and I got to spend the next couple years on Central and South American drug interdiction "advisor" duty. It's the Army way.

I spent time in the Aleutians and I will take Mainland Alaska anytime over them. To each his own but I have no desire to go back there. None. Zilch. The mainland is beautiful and holds enough adventure for me anytime.
