We routinely see 22, 32 Mag, 327 and 357 SP101s. Is a 38 Special SP101 a common variation? Haven't held it but the owner says it is specifically marked 38 Special. NIB too.

I used to see them on occasion in the shops near me, and had a friend with one. For a Handloader I’d think it wouldn’t give up anything to the 357 IF one was so inclined.
I’d think on the used market the 38 might be cheaper than a 357, but don’t know. I do know I’d buy one if the price was right. I used to want one of the 32 flavors, but decided I don’t want another caliber to set up for. Well, that’s not true, I’d like to get a 45 Colt, but that’s not relevant to SP101s.

The original SP101's were only made in 38 Special at the beginning. Some gunsmiths would open up the chambers for 357 Mag. but the cylinder was only long enough for the 125 grain load and too short for other loads. After the 357 mag was added, special runs were made in 38 Special for different customers... I think that France ordered a bunch in 38 Special, and those guns have been showing up on the surplus market for a couple of years now...
I would be very happy with one in 38 Special. Certainly strong enough for +P loads, and easier to handle than full 357 Mag loads...

SP101 38 is a great 38/44 gun.

I suppose I'm a minority, I usually am. But, I wish the manufacturers would build more runs of 38 Special Revolvers. On the 357 Magnums it would only take a reamer and marking the caliber designation.

The original SP101's were only made in 38 Special at the beginning.... That was my dusty recollection. I have one of the original 6 shot, 4" heavy barrel, 22LR versions.

My 1st year production SP101 3” 38 Special. I have several SP101’s, this was my first and my preferred. I also traded into a later 357 w/ 3” barrel, the cylinder is a tad longer, and it wears Houge rubber. There is definitely something different between the 2, the 38 is super slick and smooth, a pleasure to shoot.

I ran into one in .38 special at the pawnshop just around the corner from my house. After some forthright parlay with the owner, it is now my EDC gun. It wears a set of smooth finish Pachmayr Renegades to eliminate the tendency to print and to let me get a better grip on it.

I have 2 very early .38 Special versions, one each in the nominal 2" and 3" barrel lengths. Both were gussied up years ago by Gordon Logan. Excellent, strong guns.
