The question I have for all of the experienced African hunters is, how much do you tip your PH (Professional Hunter)? I have stumbled into a last minute chance to go to South Africa and hunt cape buffalo and some plains game. Never thinking I would ever be able to go to the Dark Continent, I have never researched what is expected from the client.
Any and all information and advice would be appreciated.

Tipping is at the hunter's discretion -- and varies widely. If you ask 10 different hunters, you could possibly receive 10 different answers. A good starting point is to ask your outfitter for a recommendation and go from there. You will not only have a PH to consider -- along with trackers, skinners, cooks, support staff, ect.

DITTO ON MARK's COMMENTS ABOVE.
TO KEEP THE BLACK CREW HAPPY (TRACKER, GAME SCOUT, ASSISTANT TRACKER, etc,) BUY A COUPLE CARTONS OF CIGARRETTES, AND EVERY MORNING YOU GIVE THE CREW A PACK OF CIGARRETTES (1 PACK PER DAY FOR THE CREW, NOT 1 PACK PER PERSON), AND AT THE END OF THE SAFARI YOU GIVE THEM THE REST OF THE PACKS. FOR FOLKS THAT USE LOOSE TOBACCO AND ANY KIND OF PAPER THEY CAN FIND FOR WRAPS, STORE BOUGHT CIGARRETTES ARE QUITE A TREAT.

I was still coaching when I went on my first safari & I had several basketball shirts left over from a basketball camp & I took them along as gifts, the kids loved them. I also took several bags of hard candy & it only took one day for those kids to figure out who the good guy was! On this last trip I had $500 American converted into Rands & I gave it to the owner & he doled it out to his PH's, cooks, skinners, trackers as he saw fit. That's the way he wanted to do it. $500 in Rands is quite a lot of money to them. I also gave Tian, my PH my own rangefinder because he didn't have one. One place we hunted on my first safari was on a tobacco farm & the tracker was rolling his own smokes using newspaper, yikes!

SIMILAR TO SIXSHOT, I WOULD TAKE MY KIDS OUTGROWN SOCCER OUTFITS TO DOLE OUT TO THE KIDS. I WOULD PUT A CHOICE SOCCER SHIRT ON THE TOP IN MY SUITCASE, AN EASY GIVE TO THE CUSTOMS OFFICER CHECKING MY BAGGAGE ON ARRIVAL IN AFRICA.

Thank you guys for answering my question. Never having been to Africa before, I have no idea what is appropriate. I don't want to be a cheapskate, but like a lot here, I am far from being financially rich, though I am rich/blessed in many other ways.
I will add the smokes to my list.

On my first safari, the tracker got a pretty nice knife.... On my Utah Shiras moose hunt the guide got a Security Six... Just did not have the cash.... When its all over you will know what to give based on your how good the entire experience was....

One other aspect -- today's exchange rate is approximately $1 to 17 Rand. HOLY COW, Mark! Back when I was going regularly, it varied from 4 to 6 per dollar. Shows how out of touch I am. Those Moscow trained ANC economists must have tried to emulate the Ruble.
