I picked up one of these Ruger 50th Anniversary 44 mags the other day as a companion to my 5 1/2 Lipsey 44 special. I haven't shot it yet, but would welcome comments on likes or dislikes particularly how it feels shooting with the XR3 grip.
On the other hand I have shot my Lipsey, and either I was having a good day at the range or this revolver is just plain accurate as is.

Everyone has noticed how accurate the Lipseys guns are, even the triggers are very good. In fact I dropped one leg on the return spring off and it made it a great trigger, I have spent a fair amount of money on other Rugers getting triggers done that are not as good as mine is now.

Those hard plastic grips chaff my dainty little hands  .... Got Cary Chapman to whip up some amboyna burl... Haven't shot it with them yet but am expecting it to be pure joy...   |

My Lipsey's trigger is pretty good like you said Fowler. I was thinking of lifting one leg off the return spring, but I might wait. I was thinking about installing a Power Custom hammer trigger kit with the half cock. I kind of miss the the sweet sounds of those clicks. I have never used one of those kits so I'm curious how it feels and sounds.
Axehandle those are some pretty grips. I have one pair of holly grips on the way and now thinking of something in elk horn mostly polished with just a little bark.

I have been blessed enough to pick up one of the 44 mag anniversary flattops and the lipseys 44 specials (5.5). Both are wringing out to be great shooters. Everything is subjective, I know, but my Lipseys is comfortable enough with the XR3 up to about 16 grains of 2400 under a 250 gn Keith. (C. Schultz grips - noticeably thicker than stock) Since 16.5 both opened up the groups and had more noticeable recoil signature, I'll stop there. On the other hand, I pushed some 290 grainers at 1350 (Lil' Gun, have to check notes for exact details)out of the 44 anniversary with the stock grips, and it abused me and chewed my hand up. I actually went to my local shop, snagged the Bisley 45 in stock, and swapped grip frames after 12 rounds of the above load. You can really appreciate the bisley grip frame if you shoot the XR3 on a Friday, swap to a bisley on Saturday, and shoot the same loads on Sunday. I used to not be a bisley fan, but I did the same experiment on my 454 BFR, and I am sold. I also have a 357 anniversary. It sports a set of "EXOTIC ROSEWOOD!" no name grips I picked out of the Cabelas bargain cave for $15 (Grips with varnish/clear?!) that are smooth, but with the same profile as factory grips. These grips are great for any 357 load I have tried in this gun, but they are not as comfortable for the 7.5 Unique/250 K load in the lipseys 44S as the wider Schultz grips. |

I agree with you on the bisley grip frame. I used to load 300 grain - 320 grain 45colts pretty hot and would shoot them through my regular 45 blackhawk and bisley in the same day alternating between the two. You can definitely feel the difference between the two. The bisley was always more comfortable for me.
I just posted a pic in the gallery showing a few of my revolvers, the bisley included.

I bought the set from CDNN intending to have the 357 turned into a 44 Special. Then came the Lipseys. I have thoroughly enjoyed all three, but my favorite 44 mag load, 240 with H110, gets old VERY quickly. Not a real problem in my case because my standard working load pushes a 240/255 swc at about 1000, and that's comfortable in both 44s. 14.0 of 2400 and a 168 grain Keith for the 357 -- 1300 fps. Both of the short guns are short -- 4 5/8ths.
Now, I want one in 45 Colt.

Had my 50th .44 flat-top fitted with maple burl by Cary Chapman. Didn't even shoot it with the factory checkered grips. I'm fine with the XR3 up to standard weight bullets at 1100-1200fps. More than that and I start looking for a Bisley.

Beautiful grips Axehandle. That pattern is quite unique for the Amboyna and really stands out. Ive shot quite a few of the Skeeter loads through my Lipsey .44 with the CaryC Mesquites and it feels like those grips were custom fitted for me. |

I have found the Hogue "cowboy" walnut grips to stop the hand chewing from 7.5 45 Colt, until I cracked the backstrap, but then again it may just be the revolver torquing and the "checkering" chewing up everybody's hands. If I'm not mistaken (and please correct me if I am) one of the reasons Colt shaped the grip on the first single action revolvers he did was because the "plow share" shape of the grip allowed the gun to rotate into the hand and seemingly take some of the bite out of recoil.
