My dad just finished a .32-40 Winchester on a Mauser 98. He blocked the magazine and made it a single shot cast bullet gun. I think it turned out pretty well. He blued the action and barrel himself and topped it with Unertl glass. The barrel is a Douglas premium grade. The .32-40 is a long-time favorite of his. He's converted a few lever guns and single shots to the round. This is his first .32-40 bolt gun. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Oh my, a Hyphenated Mauser. How cool is that.
Another old one that still works. Coated Bullets make it even better. I've even swagged down 8mm Mauser Bullets that works great.
A true Retro Classic. It just doesn't get any better...

Another cartridge with lots of history. Was originally a Ballard Cartridge just like the 38-55. Winchester put their name on them later.
Harry Pope was a big fan and built premium guns in it. He also had a really early wildcat in 338 Caliber based on it.

You can't hide poor work when there's no gawdy distractions.
I love the clean aesthetic of that rifle - a natural beauty inherent to the '98 is expertly accentuated in that execution. The motif (if you will) lives up to the beauty of the design of the '98 and is most fitting and perfectly complementary. It's not "plain." It just doesn't have any unnecessary and distracting features which detract from the soul of the rifle. THAT's how a Mauser should look.
It ain't no pig and surely don't need no lipstick!

I have always liked a straight drop bolt on a Mauser, it’s just classic good looks and style.

Nice! Can't wait to see how it shoots.
A buddy and I are building .444 Rimless on 98 Mausers. But I'm also going to build a rimmed .444 Marlin possibly on a SR Mexican 98. Should be a fun time.

I put an 8 mm barrel on on an old Remington rolling block, several years ago, chambered to 32-40 the faster twist barrel of the 8 mm was to stabilize heavier bullets... mine also wears a 20X Unertl... never did get all the cosmetics done on mine... need to pull it out & get it finished up love the single shot Mauser... what did he use for a twist rate on the barrel??? my 8X40 is 3rd from the bottom in this picture BTW... bottom rifle is a trued BRNO long action blocked to a single shot... that one is a 6.5 X 284, also still in need of cosmetic finishing, and a good long range scope... I have another Unertl, but that rifle is more "modern" so it'll likely see a more modern long range scope

Thanks guys. To answer the above questions: - The stock is an old EC Bishop blank from the 1970's. He inletted it and finished the exterior with tung oil. I believe the bedding used was aluminum Devcon - The twist is 1:12" jeffh - appreciate the kind words on its appearance. My dad never was much for fancy and/or bling. He prefers, as do I, a simple look that takes a backseat to performance. It has to function flawlessly and shoot tight. We do the same on our custom revolvers. I've always described it as 'utilitarian clean'. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Cuts the old one off and TIG welds the new handle. We've done both straight and curved. The latter starts out straight, then are heated, and finally bent in a jig. Like you, I prefer the straight. Here's a photo of a stock handle we curved in the jig: -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"
