I dropped the .45 ACP cylinder into my Powers built Flat Top along with a Colt 1911 and headed to the indoor range. I started with my six gun and as I was shooting, I could feel someone watching me. It was two really nice guys in their 20's out with their Glocks and wanted to see what I was shooting. I talked with them for quite a while, they were new to shooting and pretty intrigued by my "Cowboy" gun. One of them mentioned a 1911 being an "Old Guy" gun. Not sure when that happened, but yep, I got one of those too.

I guess I'm a proud member of the "Old Dude" excellent taste in firearms club as well, as I've experienced similar results at the indoor range I stop into occasionally during the Winter months. No one there under 35 knows anything but mass produced, soulless plastic guns anymore...And it's just plain sad!

Just remember,, we were all "young & dumb" once. As we age,,, we learn to appreciate many things that we scoffed at in our youth. The truly smarter ones,,, learn at an earlier age to appreciate the really good stuff. SA handguns,, 1911's,, lever guns,, blue steel & wood,, well, us "old guys" know what has stood the test of time.
BUT<< if we old timers,, take the time to allow the youngsters to experience our "old guy" guns,, we are allowing a spark to be lit in their minds.

You are so right! I'm thankful for the mentors that I have had. These were nice young men that had a genuine interest in the guns I was shooting. We had a great time talking old guns and new guns and hopefully I cross paths with them again soon.

Guess I've shot at an indoor range 4-5 times in my life. The 44 SBH has drawn some lookers. A short while back some of city folk co-workers invited me to meet them at an indoor venue. The 480's drew a crowd. The safety guy wasn't sure he wanted me to shoot them there after he came over. But honest questions got honest answers.

The modern 1911 is far from an "Old Dude" gun. That is the one great thing about it; it has been with us for over 100 years and every version you can think of has probably been produced by someone somewhere. And some of the custom 1911's REALLY blow my skirt up! Those guys were just uneducated and thats ok. Nothing wrong with that. I was too at one time, probably still am on a lot of subjects. That they were nice, polite young people tell me they have a lot of good life ahead of them and that gives time for learning. Did they ask to shoot any of your firearms?

I'm often amazed at the attitude of indoor gun ranges,, especially the "safety people" who have prejudices against guns other than the modern bottom feeding shell shuckers.Bring out a SA, in a larger caliber,, or heck,, even the good old 45 Colt, and they some seem to fear you are gonna blow the backstop away. Or you are going to drop the gun, or shoot holes in the ceiling etc. I was at an indoor range long ago,, and a gentleman had a BFR in 450 Marlin,, and was talking about how hard it was to shoot. He said nobody could shoot a full cylinder full. The range guy was nervous as heck,, but I calmly took his BFR, and at 25 yds shot a nice tight group of the full cylinder. Then I asked him if he wanted me to do it again. The range guy said; "Uuhh,, we need to not shoot that in here please." I know how that range was built. It was designed to handle 50 BMG rounds. It was the INDIVIDUAL who was the problem.
But,, I always take the time to introduce younger or newer shooters to "old dude guns" when I can. Often,, there are SMILES when they shoot one.

Just find an age you like and stick to it. Old eyes and shaking hands can make it a little harder but not impossible.

My son worked at a gun club while he was in college. It's apparently a running joke about old guys and their 1911 45's

Getting old sometimes has it's perks. I just found out that my club let me renew my dues at the senior rate. That's half off the regular rate that had just gone up again last year. I'm a happy old fart now.
