I was reading about lightening trigger pulls on Ruger Blackhawks and someone mentioned not to replace the hammer spring with a lighter one since it would slow the hammer drop and it could affect accuracy so it got me to wondering does anyone lighten the hammers by drilling holes or taking off excess metal to get a lighter faster hammer fall? any thoughts? Thank you

Ruger did.
They removed excess metal from the hammer when they went to the soft spring/lock grip frames. I'd say there is close to an 1/8" of difference in how "deep" the part of the hammer is between the spur and the swell where it meets the gripframe.

I guess I was thinking more along the line of modifications for a faster hammer drop done by gunsmiths or guys working on their own stuff, Would it help a little?

I install Old Army hammer springs to help scoot it along.

Groo here The drilling of holes is an old trick to increase the lock speed of a colt P.. A friend once had a colt made for a factory shooter that had a smith type adj sight [but not smith] milled in the round top-a barrel band front sight and holes in the hammer [lettered]
