A couple of posts have stirred me lately. One is about the 7-30 contender carbine. I really like that combo! The other was about the 44 special carbine T/C. Now my all time favorite cartridge is the 44 special. I have a number of handguns so chambered and a couple of magnum rifles that only get fed special ammo. I will probably order a dedicated 44 special barrel around 21” and find a good fixed 4x scope to sit on top. I can hunt 90 percent of my hunting spots with that and be good. I enjoy being close to game when I shoot more than long range hunting.
I may even order another 44 special contender barrel but only 9” long and maybe add a lightweight red dot sight. I had abandoned my contenders for Ruger single actions for a while, but I once heard that variety was the spice of life!

Take a gander down the “rook rifle” thread, good sir. Encore has some pretty interesting things cooking.

This one is a 10mm, but would make a good companion pistol to a carbine if the grip was more compact. Would be just as good in 44 Special, 41 Special, 45 AR, 38-40, take your pick of modest mid-bore rounds. As much as I like the Specials, there's not much reason to skip the magnum chambering but you don't have to justify anything to me. ![](https://i.ibb.co/qn3t5cd/IMG-4692.jpg)

I've got an 8.5" in 45 ACP. Use 460 Rowland Load Data and it produces tremendous power from that little case.
I like the Special Case and generally pick it over the Magnum. As you say, that's just personal preference.
I received a Simmons 4x Scope today that'll go on the Carbine 44 Special soon. I can't see needing more magnification than that on this little woods gun.

Mr Barton, I have followed that thread and many others that Ol Encore has started. I find him to be a trouble maker. You see he has been an encouraging force that has shown me the light of following my own path. Mr potatojudge, when I found my particular path, it became entrenched deep, plowed with the grip frames of a number of 44 special revolvers. I have said elsewhere that I don’t enjoy loading. Many others do but to me it is just a task of necessity. I can do what I need with the special. I don’t own a 44 magnum handgun anymore, so I don’t buy 44 magnum brass. It works. If I need a magnum I do have a couple of large frame 45 colt blackhawks. But I don’t need magnums. So they sit in wait beside the 357 magnums and 41 magnums whilst I kill stuff with 44 specials. I do like your stubby contender 10mm. What length?

I wish leupold would make a 4x scope the same size as the fixed 2.5x. I’d buy that.

Finished the 44 Special Barrel up today and installed the custom grip cap I had made for the two Rook Rifles.
Still waiting on the MGM 30 Reece Carbine Barrel to complete the second one.
Brant, you're welcome to ride down one day and shoot the 44 Special once you get fully recovered.
