I'm stumped. I bought a Walther P1k from MGS in Dallas: the gun was West German military, marked with the Walther banner and no export marks, built May of 1980. It has a 2 &3/4 inch barrel and the front sight is mounted on the slide, just like a P38k. I can't find any info on where these guns were used or why they were built. In "Small Arms of the World" Ezell says the P38ks were anti-terrorist and undercover guns, but I'd like to know more about it. As a big fan of "The Man from UNCLE" and Bond stuff, picking it up was a no brainer. MGS had them closed out at surplus prices, slightly more than the P-38s Gander Mountain had. I haven't seen another one at any of the shows since. Anybody have some good Walther knowledge?

I had one back in the mid 90's...It was a P38k, which had P1 decock only and screw at front of rear sight if I remember in my fog of the old brain...Mine was a good shooter, did not like HP ammo and Interarms did not import very many...Seems I paid about $700 for it, NIB. Somebody wanted it far more than I did, so they got it.

I am not a Walther expert but I dont believe there ever was a factory P1K. There was a P38K. My understanding is MGS made those up or had them made up from German police trade ins. They are supposed to be pretty nice. I believe actual Kurz (short) Walthers are marked with the K after the model.

And John Martz did them also (as well as Lugers) but his are pricey.

I have enjoyed it immensely, and I haven't seen any since I bought it... but I wonder. MGS charged a premium of about $45 for this un over a standard P1/P38.... and, the work is really well done. The front sight is perfectly centered, no weld or dovetail lines... which means MGS would have to strip the slide, weld the front sight, and then reblue the entire unit. Even with auto pistols, I like the customs!

He did alot of neat stuff with Lugers and P 38's. Here is a guy doing similar work. lugerman.com/Pages/MainPages/index.htmThats a lot of work for $45. I like the wood grips also. I put some Nill grips on my P7.

When the P-1s and P38s began flooding I snapped up 2; the "k" and a P38 from 1960. Gun Parts had the grips for $30 a pair. The Walther repair shop offers similar grips now for $175. Sheesh.

www.militarygunsupply.comI have dealt with Benny there quite a bit... he seems to be the easiest to talk with. I also bought one of the last of the PP trade ins from them. All the P38s have been gone for a while now, though. Try Gander Mountain if theres one near you. They clearanced most of 'em.
