so I have been working on fitting a pair of brass ejector housings onto a pair of Custom 45 Montado revolvers... as long as I was "dolling" them up, I thought about changing out cylinder base pins ( was thinking Belt Mountain #5's ) but I noticed that the base pins are different on the Montados ( shorter ) then last night when fitting the new ejector housings, I noticed that the ejector head actually hits the base pin head when extracting cartridges, I assume with this shorter barrel profile, the shorter pin heads were needed, as it is, the ejector doesn't fully eject the cases ( too short a throw ) so if the ejectors had a different head shape ( crescent, for example ), would it go around the base pin, and allow me the thickness of the ejector head, extra extraction??? this is what is on the revolvers now, for base pin & ejectors

There’s generally not enough material on a Ruger ejector rod head to remove the amount needed to slide around the base pin. I’ve tried. An offset ejector rod that angles the rod around the pin works, but factory Ruger slots are cut straight. With the straight slot and Ruger ejector rod your best bet is to thin the head of the ejector rod.
Keep in mind that as the ejector rod spring ‘stacks’ you will only have so much rearward movement before the spring is fully compressed. There’s some options involved with spring stack.
As far as a base pin for your purposes, I’d recommend looking at the Belt Mountain sheriff model base pin. It’s short, knurled, and you can get a locking version.

after looking at my attached picture... I thought maybe a Bullseye ejector head??? Where the bullseye attaches to the rod will still come into contact with the base pin

Just thought I would explore some options…
Since these are CASS type guns… there is very rarely a hot load, I wet tumble my brass, so cases always just fall out
may be a case of better leave well enough alone, for strength and reliability, since they are working guns, that could see tens of thousands of rounds in their lifetime???

I have a couple short barrel Seville with this type of ejector rod. They were solving another issue, but the same resolution could work for you (if you're a fan of it)
