That's a lot of power out of an 06 case.
HH go fast and make good sense out to the distance where BC outruns FPS

220 HH on top of 64 grains of Power Pro Varmint ![](https://i.postimg.cc/Gt7Xbx7V/20211013-140617.jpg) ***** John.... is this from 28” inch barrel? Either way, extraordinary velocity. Originally touted as something of a substitute for the .375 Holland & Holland, the .35 Whelan’s always been a sleeper. In preparing for a western hunt, we watched my .338 Win Mag continue much flatter as the range stretched 400 yards. Trajectory, not power, becomes the issue downrange. We stood IHMSA turkeys in sandbanks at various distances, with holdover becomes more critical with the Whelan. Given a pointed bullet, 220 grains of .35 @ 2,900 fps closes the gap. The issue in a Hind Leg Rifle also comes down to recoil, where I’ll take the .338 Win Mag over the .340 Weatherby foreclose range, out-of-position, running shot in timber. The .35 Whelan’s potential is yet another example of tayloring a load to the rifle. While Remington’s pump 760 and replacement M-6 & M-7600 continue as great woods carbines and rifles, more often than not sharing bolt rifle accuracy, I suspect you ammo is for the falling block or bolt action only, and too much for a slide or lever action. Yes 28" barrel ![](https://i.postimg.cc/s2SMGwWY/Screenshot-20211009-053140-Drive.png) The Speer data using Power Pro Varmint, 2000MR and CFE223 is a game changer for the 35 Whelen. I get anywhere from about 80 to 116 FPS more with factory loads than their claimed velocity in my rifle. That is about where I am with these loads. The 220 HH has a claimed G7 BC of 204 which is about a 414 G1 BC

hammerbullets.com/product/358-cal-220g-hammer-hunter/Powder selection for the Hammer tends to be different than other bullet styles and fps gains usually higher than 200 fps I suspect you’re leaving velocity on the table with this load. No matter. Accurate and powerful as-is. Is recoil different using Hammer bullets? Pressure is down, muzzle energy is up. Curious how that changes feel.

I can only go with 63 grains of Power Pro Varmint (1 grain less) with the 225 TSX for 2850 average velocity. I may try 64.5 grains behind the 220 Hammer Hunter

Is it the Hunter that uses Barnes data? Some hammers do snd others use faster than typical powders to hit velocity at a powder volume.

What do you plan on hunting with the rifle?

What do you plan on hunting with the rifle? Mostly deer. Louisiana has what is called "Primitive Weapon Season" to qualify requires a single shot with an exposed hammer this gives 3 extra weeks of hunting.

2 buck tags, 3 doe tags and 1 either sex tag 6 total. Is there any rules against taking them all with one bullet..? Line 'em up!

I looked those bullets up. Very interesting! Also expensive. I wouldn't be shooting coyotes with those bullets for sure.
