I have an old .44 Bulldog. Am just up from running a batch of reloads in the basement, and found this website ! A couple of guys at camp have newer Ruger SP101's. Though 38/357 form Ruger, wonder what they'd be like in .44spec ? Seems a stouter, more modern piece than my Bulldog. Your thoughts ? steve b

The SP101 is to small for the 44. It has been done on the mid size Ruger frame. Smith & Wesson has and are building the 44 on the L frame and is a step up in strength from the Bulldog. The 396 Night Guard is the current version. Your Bulldog is going to be the smallest 44 not counting a derringer.

This, seen here before, done on a Speed-Six. Seems to me, the GP100 would be a great basis for the 44 special and the 41 mag as well.

I do like the small size. In summer, it often rides in my back right shorts pocket, just enough of the butt (guns) exposed to grab. Its my lawn mowing, leaf raking gun. Goes to camp in the hills too, for the middle of the night outhouse trips. steve b

steveb, Sounds like you got a mission critical piece of equipment there.

I have always lusted after those DA ASPs. A great carry gun. Once had a Speed Six with factory spurless hammer and Ron Powers action job. Foolishly let it get away. Bob

Met guy named Mike, at a course a couple yrs ago. He's the Cor-Bon rep. After class he pulled out a BIG cardboard ammo box and told us to "Help ourselves". My first grab was a box of DPX .44spec.. its whats in the Bulldog now, or anytime I'm carrying it for real. My second choice in a factory load would be one of the Gold Dot loadings, third the Hornady Custom, using the 180 XTP. I'll be duplicating the Hornady loading at the loading press soon. Stay safe. steve b

Bob I had a NIB U.S. Navy NIS speed six too, very few guns have I ever wanted back, but of the ones I have wanted back, there were none more than this one...

A pair of 3" M696 S&W and a pair of 4" M24-3 S&W The 3" version is a joy to pack and can handle most woods bumming situations.

I am fortunate enough to have three 44 Special DAs. The newest is this 1983 vintage 5" Model 24-3. It has been re-barreled but I don't know who did the work. Next is this 1954 Model of 1950 or 4th Model 44 Hand Ejector. It started life as a 6-1/2" but was badly cut down to 3-1/4". I bought it from a gunsmith friend who put the 4" M24-3 barrel on, then bead blasted and blued it to make the barrel match the rest of the gun. Finally is the oldest and most significant. This is a 1st Model 44 HE, also known as the New Century and most commonly the Triple Lock. Mine was re-blued which made it affordable. Shipped from the factory in 1914, blued with the 5" barrel and fixed sights. I have other N-frames in other calibers but the 44 Special has always been my favorite. Dave
