Just picked up a Winchester/Miroku 1886 TD 26 inch barrel with a matte finish. Got it from a fellow member over on leverguns. He changed it over from a rebounding hammer, removed the tang safety, and added a tang sight. I removed the tang sight, don't like them and now I have a hole where the safety used to be. I'm looking for ideas on how to fill the hole. I'm thinking maybe a chunk of brass with my initials, or a small piece of nice wood, or ...... I don't know. How about some suggestions to help me out. I'm also thinking of changing the butt stock over to a shotgun style. That crescent butt with heavy loads is not enjoyable at all.

My partner made a plug from some scrap steel then cold blued it. Brass would look good. His is in 45-90. With the weight of the gun I didnt find the crescent butt plate uncomfortable.

Have you thought about just tapping the hole and screwing a bolt in it, then grinding/filing/sawing/however you want to d oit the head off the bolt and cold bluing it?

nobearsyet I think the hole is oblong in the shape of the safty. Ricky I like the idea of engraved brass. Your name or maybe a tally of the big game you take with it.

That could be cool, but if it's oblong the shape of the safety couldn't one drill the hole a bit bigger?

I think it's like 1/4" X 1", a tang safty kinda like a Mossberg pump shotgun or a O/U.

Texasfivegun is correct on the size. I still haven't decided what to do yet. Leaning towards fitting a piece of brass and then put my initials on it. But that is getting a little flashy for me, I can't decide.

Then maybe fit a piece of steel?

I spoke to TexasFiveGun on the phone and he suggested a piece of Ivory. I think thats the way I'm going to go. I believe that would look really good and not be flashy. What do ya'll think
